You know is one of those games that has a really gnarly reputation, and I find it isn't entirely deserved. It is a really unified system, so you hit less weird exceptions on play then D&D. You want +1 on a skill roll? Double the time it takes. Very simple and flexible, and builds in a nice risk-reward system for stuff like lock picking on public.

@Canageek I would still like to learn the GURPS system. I had a friend try to get me into it but circumstances were poor and I didn't absorb it well

@kara Yeah. To be honest I've never sat down and read all the rules, just leanred through play

@Canageek
It's the chargen that gives it the crunchy reputation. Once that's done, the play is perfectly straightforward.

@gcupc @kara @Canageek I always used an excel table with formulas that automatically calculated skill expenses and stuff anyway so yeah. (Blessed be internet excel masters.) It was never that bad.

It does tend to get really lethal when combat happens, but that is easy to mitigate if it isn’t what ppl want.

Even the chargen isn't all that mathy, it's just very detailed, and there are often multiple ways of achieving the same results that have different point costs. And there's a certain subset of the gurps player base that will look askance at you if your build is not maximally efficient.

@gcupc @kara @Canageek I like to make sure my points are spent well for sure; I just don’t want to have to do the same or similar math over and over to reach something sensible (hence my love of effort-saving spreadsheets). They kept me from quitting on the task out of sheer exhaustion so I could have fun making choices. 👍

@Cobalt @gcupc @Canageek GURPS is the sort of game that makes me want to start writing stochastic optimizing algorithms for it, rather than actually _play_ it >_>

@Cobalt @gcupc @Canageek you know, that's probably why I didn't really get into GURPS. you know how some games are, like, more amenable to breadth-first approach than depth-first approach? like, chess is good for depth-first, but go needs breadth. well, GURPS needs breadth of search, and that's not my strength XD being presented with myriad options just fuddles me on a basic level that I'm only just starting to grapple with

@Canageek @kara
Gurps worldbooks are useful by themselves, for any game, or as a light information source.

@kara @shadowfirebird The WWII French book seems to have a number of popular misconceptions in it though.

@Canageek @shadowfirebird uh oh, that's a bit of a sensitive point with me, the French involvement with WWII and the fall of the Third Republic was a topic of considerable interest to me in the past
