🧵 Wednesday Reddit GM Advice Thread🧵

🧛‍♀️ 💀 🌞 Fun idea brainstorming about a group of vampires looking to destroy the sun

🧛‍♀️ ⚔️ Thinking about uses Strahd could find for a kidnapped player character assassin

🗓️ :d12: And options for when some players can't make it

Killing the sun is one of my favorite game ideas that I haven't used yet.

I enjoy these, looking for ideas and brainstorming threads. They break things up and feel less speaking-from-the-experienced-GM-pulpit

A few things about this next one:

Sometimes the thought process to go with is:

What reaction can the villain have that leads to more adventure?

Also, it is fun to look at the adventurer PC's as people with rare and useful skills.

In the early days of 3.0 I had a Red Dragon send a captured Bard to Tu'narath to petition the Lich Queen for Githyanki Legions.

2 main ways to go with player absences:

Have a B-Game ready to go. I've seen B-Games outlive and outlast the games they were meant to stand in for and they are a great excuse to try that odd idea or system.

-OR-

Set up the main campaign so that missing characters don't grind things to a halt.

We're looking to kind of epilogue out of our current D&D campaign and need 100% of the crew to be there. A player is having dread computer woes.

So, we play a B-Game and wait...

And that is about it for this week.

Comments, thoughts, questions, additions always welcome.

@Judd Obviously, the soundtrack for that campaign has to be Dawnbringer's Into the Lair of the Sun God.

@auguryignored

Totally! Love that album.

Part metal album, part fantasy novel.

@Judd If you ever need a good listen in a similar vein, I can recommend Jess & The Ancient Ones' eponymous album. In particular, the song Sulfur Giants seems like a Moorcockian fantasy epic condensed to 12 minutes of heavy metal brilliance.

@auguryignored

Good call. Always looking for more metal like that.

Thanks!

@Judd Noticed your use of "reaction" here and it reminded me to ask you how to spell the name of your caller who spoke about "reactions" vs. "consequences"? Thanks!
