Moved to tabletop.social @MxFraud

Any other way to say GM/DM ? I'm after something that doesn't have master in it.

(boost appreciated)

@MxFraud I've not used any other terminology in my group, but a few ideas off the top of my head:
* storyteller
* world builder
* dungeon guide

@ishara @MxFraud host, lorekeeper, enabler, umpire, compass (shows you the way to go, but doesn't tell you how to get there)

@MxFraud also seen “referee” or “facilitator” (that last especially for GM-less or distributed-GM games)

@jan "facilitator" sounds nice (referee sounds very sport-y but definitely valid)

@MxFraud Referee was popular when I was growing up with RPGs in the 70s.

@MxFraud I still reflexively refer to the person as "ref" regardless of the game.

@Halfjack ref sounds even better (I like how GM/DM is short).
I'm very tempted by ref now.

@MxFraud It's totally reflexive for me. Has the most natural mouth feel.

@JordiGH game moderator is also very good.
Dungeon Manager sounds a bit like my actual job.

@MxFraud @JordiGH "So I initially studied to be an actor, but I'm quite happy nowadays with my regular job as an Assistant Dungeon Manager at a local abandoned cave..."

@gaditb @JordiGH I'm in IT and I look after some old stuff that no one wants to deal with, old applications, hardware etc.
Still looking for adventurous folks to destroy those decaying monsters and clear the dungeon realy.

@Gargron @MxFraud @JordiGH (It was a joke on theatre -- off of Assistant Stage Manager.)

So far I have been told:
- Dungeon manager
- Game moderator
- Referee / Ref
- Narrator
- Game Runner
- Facilitator
- storyteller
- world builder
- Dungeon Guide

I'm very tempted by Ref

@MxFraud I would play the hell out of a game called _Dungeon Manager_.

about GM/DM alternative name, long list Show more

@MxFraud Exalted uses Storyteller, and I think other White Wolf/Onyx Path games do too.

@MxFraud Game monitor. Game instigator. Game overseer. The Grand High Poohbah of the Game and Its World.

@MxFraud how about, like, Prophet? or Guide?

@MxFraud G O D .

more serious suggestions: storyteller, narrator, world-runner, ... I dunno, stuff like that.

@MxFraud I never wanted to say "Web master" so I always said "Web wrangler"

@MxFraud The Lojban term is {kelgi'a}, pronounced "kell gi ha" :P

(A contraction of the words for "play" and the word for "guide")

@MxFraud
In Apocalypse World they use MC.
In Hebrew the most common word after Dungeon Master is מנחה, which is somewhere between Guide, Facilitator and Host. It's pretty sweet.

@MxFraud Chuubo's has a Hollyhock God; it occurs to me that if you don't like "master," "god" is going in the wrong direction, but it's a god of flowers (and by implication, small, unimportant things)

@MxFraud Narrator? Weaver of fates? Voice from the off? God of dice?

@MxFraud the danish term for GM is "spilleder"* which translates directly to Game Leader.

Game Director is also an option?

(* at least in LARP, danish tabletop RPGers use english terms most of the time)

@zatnosk @MxFraud in German it's "Spielleiter", same thing (but definitely also used in tabletop RPG)
