Changeling Cantrip Cards

These cards were to be used with Changeling the Dreaming one of the original World of Darkness games. They were part of how the magic system worked.

It was a fascinating concept and a really solid system that fit in really well with the setting. The cards were high quality, tarot sized, and gorgeous!

Sadly the entire thing was completely ruined by making it use randomly packaged collectible cards.

@TabletopBellhop I think generally when a TTRPG tries to make part of its mechics CCG based, fans are not super pleased (Gamma World 7E did this too).

I'm personally not a huge fan of cards in TTRPGs at all, as it's another component to physically keep track of in a potentially theater of the mind game.

In the case of Changeling, they replaced the cards with just making up your own rotial for cantrip. Which is something I love to do anyway.

@PTR_K

Gamma World is another great example of a game that did this, though it fit that setting better to me due to the gonzo nature of the game.

I love cards in RPGs when used for the right things, like making it so I don't have to look up things in rulebooks.

@TabletopBellhop Different priorities or aesthetics i guess.

I tend to use virtual tabletops almost exclusively. I like something that can be distributed as a single document or electronically searched in a hurry. Even for in person games: more physical pieces means more things I can lose or forget to bring.

@PTR_K Fair enough, whatever works for you and your group.

@TabletopBellhop The cards were a very neat idea, and I liked the bit where your group could build cantrips off each others’ cards like a crossword puzzle.I agree that they shouldn’t have sold random packs, though. A non-random box set would’ve been better.

@AllTheAmpersands

YES! I loved the way you actually used the card and how the art on them could be used for inspiration for some effects.

I think they did offer a full set eventually but at that point I already owned half the cards from buying blind boosters.

@TabletopBellhop Speaking of Changeling and booster packs, do you remember the Arcadia collectible card game? Another neat idea but I’m fuzzy on how solid the gameplay was.

@AllTheAmpersands

Yep, had a few cards, the neat way the characters standees worked was memorable.

I didn't love the gameplay though.
