@mxfraud @Tom Do you know the intent behind that design decision? I'm quite curious!

@JasonT @Tom Those number are a mind trick to make you feel like you are missing out (for the out crowd.)
(For the in crowd) it encourags the type of behaviour that tends to be counter productive for a satisfactory conversation (more =/= beter, quantity over quality).

No displaying this kind of data or making it less prominent (like follow count, etc), it de-incentivise mainstream social media behaviour that were invented to drive traffic for selling more ads.

@mxfraud @Tom That's very interesting, thanks! Do you know whether there was any user research behind that decision, or whether it was more an educated guess? I'm very curious whether it actually provides a better experience for some. It irks the heck out of me, but not everything needs to be made for my benefit.

@JasonT @mxfraud @Tom Also it's kind of difficult from the client end to walk the thread. i know I wanted to show replies and I would have to load in each message to do it. The way it's exposed is a bit tricky.

There is a way on newer version of Mastodon to display whether something has one or more responses to it, but the reasons that MxFraud elaborated are a major part of it.
