I actually know nothing about this game, but I still know that it's an important classic from that era that started a long and successful series.
@Yora Xenogears is an odd beast.
It's basically "chapter 5" of an earlier draft of what would later become Xenosaga (which was supposed to have six chapters, but got cut down to 3). After that, the Xenoblade games were made, which are primarily related by a shared main author and the kinds of thematic similarities that entails.
@Yora As for the game itself, it was an excellent PSX-era JRPG... for the first disc. Unfortunately, Squaresoft was overextending itself at the time, so the rest of the story was largely told narratively on disc 2. As such, people who remember it fondly often lament how its presence in copyright hell denies us the possibility of a remake with a "real" disc 2.
@Yora The gameplay involved fights both on foot and in Gears (read, mecha). The story was heavy on religious, philosophical, and existential themes... and heavy in general, to the point of sometimes having save points partway through sequences of cutscenes. It was ambitious, and fascinating for how it did and didn't live up to those ambitions.
