Something in the Dirt is one of my new favorite movies. I was expecting slightly more #horror than the film delivers. It feels more sci fi to me, but either way a serious mindfuck in an interesting and enjoyable form.
Like, similar to a movie like Inception, this film has layers. Unlike movies like Inception I did not feel like I was being called to figure out every detail and layer.
Once you understand (or begin to anyway) what's going on, you do notice shifts from one thing to another, but it's honestly just extremely entertaining. And of course extremely meta.
I would say if you consider it as the final instalment in a #MetaHorror trilogy alongside #Resolution and #TheEndless (both made by the same duo: Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson), #SomethingInTheDirt makes a very fitting capstone.
I'm also pretty sure the entertainment value *is* better if you have seen a couple films from their filmography.
Knowing that they are two guys who make movies together, often about just two people—movies in which they sometimes play themselves as well as writing and directing them—makes the joke/theme/gimmick hit especially hard.
I'd say in addition to people who are fans of Benson and Moorhead's films, fans of films like #Primer or #Coherence would likely also be intrigued by #SomethingInTheDirt.
