My husband's family are usually pretty great, but we're on a trip together, and I'm starting to see why he has stress and anxiety around certain things.
My family had some real issues when I was growing up...but the concept of "everyone has mental and emotional needs that should be taken seriously,l"—while not always perfectly executed—was at least generally accepted (not by my older sister, but she's a piece of work).
If this were a trip with my family, "I'm having anxiety and need a breather" would be a thing you could say out loud, and everyone would go "that's perfectly reasonable. Is there anything we can do to help you feel better?"
I'm fine. I'm just pissed on his behalf.
When someone says "I'm sorry for being high maintenance" because they needed a small thing that caused only the mildest inconvenience, the correct response is "not a problem at all!" not silence.
