I've tried following (as in "keeping track of", not "use a function named 'following', if that exists") postings/discussions on + but I find the interface beyond confusing. Is there a mode of viewing posts that's closer to, say, newsgroups, web forums, feeds or even Mastodon?

Otherwise, yeah... G+ is a walled garden and a dying platform. There is no rss parts or anything like that for it. You can control what communities can notify you over email and that would be the closest old school #usenet esque method... You would still have to go to the web interface to reply.
