I’ve not spent a lot of time thinking about projections of maps until recently when I’ve been looking at larger areas in which you can’t avoid the consequences of having to stretch and or tear a sphere to fit in a flat piece of paper. The 3d world map sketch with plate boundaries is perfect to illustrate this. I drew the map directly on the globe, which had cylindrical mapping, so when I exported it was a cylindrical equirectangular projection map.

It’s fun to look at other projections, which you can easily convert the equirectangular map into with free software such as G.Projector over at NASA. Here are a few, I’m thinking that I might draw a map this way at some point…
