I know the way most folks design their RPG layouts is with InDesign but one of the goals with the Pepper&Carrot RPG is to keep it as open as possible. So I"m looking into LaTeX for Layout.
Lest you think me completely off my rocker, here's a RPG that uses LaTeX and has what I would consider professional layout:
This week I'm going to work on the Pepper&Carrot RPG that has been laying dormant for way too long. Follow my progress here:

For me GURPS always felt like it was difficult to figure out the balance between rules-light and crunchy. It always felt like if you weren't using everything then you were somehow failing the system. Sure, there were optional rules, but it felt like turning the resolution down and lowering the quality of textures on a high-end video game: sure you could do that, but to get the best experience everything should be cranked up as high as it'll go.
Ever since I've given up on GURPS I've been re-reading Fudge. What an absolute treat. I know that Fate derives a lot of it's system from Fudge, but it's interesting to see how Fudge is fitting with my game design brain. I think it's a little complex in certain areas, but the beauty is that complexity can be stripped away if need be and re-added later if that wasn't the right call.

Dear Game Designers (especially Powered by the Apocalypse Designers)
Please put the name of your game on your playbooks / character sheets.
This may seem like needless branding but it'll help those of us who have a large directory of PDF files that have somehow separated your files from each other.
Even better: a filename convention like "your_awesome_game_....pdf" would be really helpful.
Anyone who says that GURPS is not dead should try selling it sometime.
I've been re-reading through Fudge rules and I'm coming to realize that what I thought was a good system before is a great system. I like the way that it can scale rapidly from simulationist to rules-lite without really breaking any of its core rules.
It's also sparking my game designer brain. Love it when the neurons fire like that.
Re-reading through some of my Fudge books. For whatever reason they're starting to click more with me than before. I knew they were good before but now they are resonating with me. It's like I gave myself permission to go exploring again.

Honestly having any opinion about GURPS that isn't "this is the best system around but it has some flaws and here they are listed in chronological order of appearance" is probably enough to get me flamed off of the internet.
