Everyone keeps framing the "Mastodon is Too Hard for most people" debate as a critique of the server-choice/sign-up UX. It's not.
"Mastodon is Too Hard", because it **requires agency** from its users. You can't sit back and watch it flow by. You have to make decisions, all the time - what server?, who to follow, look at hashtags, make lists.
As a result of generations of training, "most" users are on social media for entertainment - not engagement. You can't fix that in software.
