not a martian, honest

During one of the last eps of Wandering DMs it was pointed out that in white box 8th level fighters (superheroes was the class title) had the ability to detect invisibility.

I never noticed that before, but I also never delved that deep into it.

I do actually like that idea though. It kinda fits with a lot of the fiction where high level warriors have an almost supernatural sense for hidden enemies.

That whole idea got lost in later editions. Most likely also because original dnd was such a baroque mess that many people might simply have never realized this was a fighter power in the first place.

@kyonshi That scans with my experience of growing up playing the various editions.

My main group was playing 2e and Rules Cycopedia Basic (this was before 3e was out) and I remember just finding random rules I'd never heard of, like that in 2e *any character* wearing leather armour or lighter got a +2 to AC! (It was hidden in the ability score definition for Dex, lol).

@DarkSheepArts a lot of dnd is really about learning it via osmosis. This was always the case. In fact I would argue that our hobby mostly exists because people tried to make sense of the original dnd after seeing it played somewhere.

And part of it is that the rules are written in such a hermetic way you always find something new.

@kyonshi Yeah, there's a table in AD&D but I never used that. I should put some very simplified version in my Olde House Rules.
