not a martian, honest

Rewatched the Babylon 5 pilot (The Gathering) lately with my wife (and the kids).
It certainly is very 1993, isn't it?

The series only got greenlit later on, so there was a production break in between. Enough time obviously for Earth Alliance hairstyles (or maybe just military regulations) to change. Which makes for an interesting if unintentional piece of realism in the series.

By the way, the currently best available version is the redone version. Which removes and adds a few bits. I distinctively remember being impressed by the tour of the alien sector during my first watch as an 11yo. This was removed in the later version because it looked too much like a zoo.
Which makes the whole sequence of them going in and out of it rather pointless. Oh well.

By the way, I still haven't grokked G'Kar's angle in this episode. I just don't get what his whole plan was with this whole mess.

Of course it was supposed to set him up as the clear villain, so this later in the series could be subverted. But it still should make sense dammit. Why was he so intent on helping the assassin reach his goals? Maybe it showed his overconfidence in his scheming abilities.
