@servelan there is the possibility he meant it as a (still creepy) compliment and not as a rape threat.
But if that's the case he hopefully learned a lesson in thinking before speaking.
@cykonot @servelan I dunno, more like "if I ever had a choice I'd like to do it with you"
Now I don't know the situation at hand, but I know stupid and horny teenage boys. It just sounds like one of those stupid things they say because they can't even understand how it could be misinterpreted. Teenagers are DUMB, even if they aren't malicious.
On the other hand the guy might just have been an evil little shitnugget, so what do I know?
@kagan @cykonot @servelan I'm just, you know, acting from my own experience of saying and doing stuff I thought was normal or even nice, and having it interpreted in the worst possible way.
I think a lot of people had that experience as teenagers, you know, that stuff you said where even years later you think back and get embarrassed about it?
I just don't wanna jump on the outrage train and call for a kid to be expelled if there's a chance that it might have been just stupidity.
@kyonshi @kagan @servelan he got suspended, not expelled. Here's the history of the phrase, since you may be unfamiliar
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_body,_my_choice
And understand his subversion of that phrase comes from right-wing influencers who want to take away women's rights
Policy should be based around overall outcomes, NOT tailored to give permission / cover to parties one has special sympathy towards... Boys will be boys, certainly, but it is for society to decide what that means.
@kyonshi @kagan @servelan and here it is in the memetic context of antivaxers
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/17506980241262391
Edit: I have been in Xbox lobbies and on chans long ago. No excuse, in my opinion. Excuses would cause more harm than anything.
@cykonot @kagan @servelan yes I know the origin of the phrase.
The problem is that you are quite sure about how a lot of this went down and what the guys motivation was, when all you are going off are the same two posts I have as a reference here.
And I think that's quite self-righteous of you. It most likely makes you feel better though, and maybe that has some value in itself.
@kyonshi @kagan @servelan I only referenced information in the post, hardly any extrapolation. Again, the quote would have to be WRONG for your tone interpretation to make ANY sense, and he would have to be in an extremely unlikely social situation.
You're assuming the information is wrong in the post, I'm just following along with it. And women aren't generally just crazy lol, you're rejecting the entire context on so many levels to make it seem like people are jumping to conclusions.
@kyonshi @cykonot @kagan @servelan If I come up behind you and press something hard into your back while saying “Stick your hands up”, would you be defending me as someone who might be encouraging active stretching?
Particular phrases mean things. You don’t twist a phrase that is associated with a right to an abortion into a compliment by saying “your body, my choice”, you turn it into a threat of sexual violence.
@kyonshi I can't understand how "Your body, my choice" could possibly be intended as a "normal or even nice" thing to say. To me, at least, its very plain, obvious intent seems to be, "I don't care about your choice, and will use your body however I see fit."
Can you explain to me how someone could mean this in a nice way?
@kagan @cykonot @servelan nice? Maybe not. As I said, it would be creepy anyway.
It just strikes me as a phrase that could be used as a creepy come on (as in: your body is so fine it would be my choice), especially if the speaker doesn't get all the implications of the phrase.
Now if it was an adult male I would say definitely a threat. For a teenager I would say, eh, 70-80% a threat and otherwise a very dumb teenager trying to use a phrase he heard and doesn't understand.
@kyonshi Dude. Learn to take a hint. Stop talking.
@baconandcoconut @kagan @kyonshi @cykonot @servelan
Or what you're doing actually qualifies as rape
Which is a thing. I've seen surveys that, if you ask, "Do you rape?" the anser is no, but if you list out the consent & boundary-crossing behaviors without calling it rape, then there are men who will actually answer "yes."
Because that's not unreasonable, right?
