Listening to the audiobook of Steal Like an Artist, and finding it genuinely inspiring. In that vein, a ttrpg design exercise for those who think they can’t come up with ideas (or even those that do):

Name your favourite rpg
Now name you favourite media property
Hack the former to play what you live about the latter

I promise, I’m the course of doing so you will design something original enough.

@linnaeus holy shit not sure how I am going to hack The Count of Monte Christo with Nobilis but it sounds amazing

@kleenestar So I’ve only read Three Musketeers so far and only know Nobilis by reputation but…

Embodiments of the spirit of swashbuckling sounds promising?

@kleenestar @linnaeus In our Nobilis campaign we had at least two epic swordfighting duels (one where the Power of Cooking fought an Excrucian on a burning zeppelin, one where the god of Penmanship fought somebody... maybe an angel?), so I think it would work.

@linnaeus - You'd think crossing Macross and Lancer would be easy, but I've been trying for months now.

@gallowglas I haven’t dug deeply into Lancer but, yeah, it’s a different breed of mechs than Macross for sure. I look forward to seeing the result when you crack it though.

@linnaeus @gallowglas A friend of mine is running Beam Saber for myself and her girlfriend. I pretty much straight up lifted Priss Asagiri from Bubblegum Crisis for my character. The other player? Has a giant mech with a dubstep cannon. We're a musical tour.

@linnaeus Robocop using the BLOODY-HANDED NAME of BRONZE. That’s what I would like to try.

@AnarchoDom BHNB is on the to read pile, but I am only barely familiar with it. Love Shock though so I expect it’s great.

@linnaeus Joshua considers it to be the best game he designed, by quite a margin.

It has lots of potential for irony, like Shock:, but is less taxing in terms of handling dice mechanics.

I cannot recommend enough!

@linnaeus I feel like I already did this at least a half a dozen times. Each time I learned something interesting and got a cool game out of it.
