Proper games criticism isn’t aimed at the creators of the game(s) mentioned. It is aimed at those trying to learn more about design, whether to learn to design better or to better appreciate the games they encounter.

Implicit in this is that “Game X sucks” or “Game X is amazing” aren’t criticism. When you justifiably take issue with them, please do not call them criticism.

@linnaeus Absolutely. Rampant cynicism also shutters it. I know folks (including me!) who have a avoided sharing affirming things online for fear of "trying to look good for attention." But manufactured outrage for clicks gets a pass more often. It's all a mess!

@linnaeus Same. It's an essential thing to building a real community, and I think that's lacking in most (maybe all) of the way social media is currently structured.

It’ll always be a work in progress, but trying to amp up the amount of affirmation I share in my social media use.

I just realized that I've never done an intro post here!

👋 I'm Marc (he/them) and I'm mostly here for ttrpg stuff. I've played RPGs since 1983 or so, and been designing since slightly before that. :D Been a computer guy for about as long, but I'd love to ditch that and go make stuff with my hands instead.

I teach programming at a bootcamp, and I have opinions about that. I've done a ton of stuff on stage in the last decade or two, but not much lately.

I'm an open book, AMA any time, always.

@linnaeus Lately, I’ve been fiddling with Iron Core and I really like it. I think mechanics where players need to distribute dice results in different categories is my vibe.

Probably explains why Adam Vass’s Y2K is on my mind these days (and also my obsession with BHNoB.)

Y2K is using a d100 for general results, but you then take your rolled d10s to assign them to determine fallout.

Both are free!

@linnaeus Spotlights as they appeared in Glitch by Jenna Moran. I wrote a bunch about what they are and how they work and how they could be used in other games here: nickwedig.libraryofhighmoon.co

@Linnaeus

The Unscene from The Between in an interesting way to present setting.

What mechanic in a TTRPG released in the last year or so intrigues you the most? I am happy to hear why it intrigues but I’m not looking to define mechanic or intrigue. Trust your gut. Doesn’t need to be original to that game either, just wondering what the most interesting design out there is.

"Misspent Youth is unlike any other RPG I’ve ever played.... This is a game that lets us focus on the story, and makes it possible for old guys like me to imagine that we’re still young and fighting every day for something more important than a parking space."

Concept: Dungeons as the "winning" culture.

Everyone, absolutely everyone, lives in buried / fortified / both settlements that are continually feuding and raiding one another.

Lorekeepers and such say that it wasn't always so, but that was in the deep ancient times, when "elf" and "orc" were things you might be, not just like elfic eye shapes or green blood being "orcen", or the Gnomish Weaving Revival.

A simple quick start dungeon delving ttrpg to hack and build your own table's game upon.

dungeonpunk is a simple fantasy tabletop roleplaying game designed be easy to start play with and easy to hack and expand on with house rules and supplements. The game is a simple stripped back set of rules based on Apocalypse World and Blades In The Dark provided under a Creative Commons Zero or Public Domain license with a community wiki available at https://dungeonpunk.xyz all in the hopes of building an ecosystem of moves, monsters, house rules, supplements, and hacks that can be shared and used according to each tables' needs. The hope is that if players want to "Play some DnD" that dungeonpunk will let them get started quickly and easily and let them add the complexity they want as they go.

You can find dungeonpunk on itch and also on the community wiki at https://dungeonpunk.xyz .

Short rant about misconception of Mastodon

I read an article where the writer is repeatedly uneasy about how conversations on Mastodon are devoid of politics, ”as if the outside world doesn’t exist.” The idea being that the birdsite is more connected to reality?

It’s frustrating to me that anyone would portray algorithm-boosted rage as representative of the world stage, and real, human conversation as non-representative of the human condition and human desire.

The world is upside-down.

Hoping to use this space as a place to have authentic connection about a lot of cool stuff, instead of yelling into the ether and inevitably coming off as preachy.

Particularly interested in spec bio, molecular genetics, knowledge mobilization, music, and storytelling (especially in a performing arts context). I'm not a game designer, but am pretty good at play testing and bouncing ideas around.

Reminder: one time Sulu was Space Drunk and running around the Enterprise with a sword and he grabbed Uhura and yelled "I'll save you fair maiden!" and she ad-libbed "Sorry, neither!" (it wasn't originally in the script) (and they left it in!) winning best ad-lib of the century

You don't have to make games that cater to people unlike yourself, but it's good to understand what other motivations people have about the games they play, because if you wait around for everyone to realize you are right you will become increasingly bitter about the hobby and how everyone else is wrong
