I was scrolling through YouTube and saw one of those "first reaction" videos for a guy listening to Stairway to Heaven.
I I could think of was, "you big liar." (I didn't actually watch it, it might be true, but come on)
All I'm saying is, the guy would have to either be quite young, or have lived a cloistered life to have not heard it unintentionally or unknowingly in a movie or something.
@montecook I saw one of those in which the drummer listens a song for the first time and tries to follow along, and the track was: ENTER SANDMAN.
...
The guy was like 25~30yo. Like... It's statistically impossible !!
@montecook David Bowie was the one that got me. Mentioned him to a mid-20s coworker and they had no idea who he was. I died a little inside that day.
@montecook well, you know, half my students have never seen Star Wars.
@apolaine @montecook Heck, *my current DM* has never seen Star Wars. Her only familiarity with it is by pop cultural osmosis.
@pteryx @montecook you’ll be telling me she has never read Lord of the Rings next.
@montecook there's def an SNL sketch about this topic!
@montecook just to put a perspective on this:
I have a notoriously shitty memory and won the whamageddon for three straight years because I didn't know how the song went until someone purposely told me. I have since forgotten how the song goes. They might not be lying at all.
@montecook
I think that sitting and listening to a song can produce a very different reaction to hearing it incidentally.
In this case, a reaction I’d expect is “Oh it’s still going? … cool”
