I don't know how it completely flew under my radar, but I only just today learned about , a new system by . There's a free preview over on hitpointpress.com/shiftrpg/ that includes a quickstart guide, character sheets, and an in their own Maelstrom game setting.

I'm always happy to see simpler systems that I can use for an impromptu one-shot, especially if they also bring something new to the table. I'm certainly looking forward to giving it a try.

The system is rather lightweight and centered around narrative-focused "Traits". Traits optionally carry "Keywords" and "Drawbacks" that affect how they can be
applied to a situation.

Each Trait is associated with a "Shift die", which range from D4 to D12. These dice can change ("shift") during play, making success more or less likely. Only rolls of 1, 2, and 3 are a success, whereas rolling a die's highest value has it shift to the next larger die until they are eventually "exhausted".

@perry looks interesting! I've downloaded the pdf and I've reached out to my regular gaming group to see if anyone wants to run it (or if it'll be me as usual...)

@perry so... it turns out one of my players is going to run a game this Sunday! Thanks for sharing the link :)

@edchivers You're very welcome. I'm looking forward to hearing how you and your group feel about it afterwards

@delanthear you're welcome… I guess?

@perry @delanthear it was fun! (but terrifying!)

We haven't finished the adventure, but we've done some exploring and some combat. I'm sure my dice critical failed way more than they should have done, based on the maths, and we had to guess at how a few of the rules worked because there were places where it was a bit vague.

It did feel like an unfinished game system, but I really liked it. The adventure setting is really evocative.

Have you played it yourself?
