@courtcan @mekkaokereke A couple years ago a Black family moved into the rowhome across the street from me. The dad would always greet me from across the street: "Hi, neighbor!" "Good afternoon, neighbor!" At first it was kind of offputting — I'm not super sociable and a friendly nod is about my speed — until one day I realized: He's not trying to be my friend, he's trying to make sure I and anyone listening recognize him as someone who belongs in this neighborhood so we don't call the cops.
