I'm reading a lot about #ActivityPub, #indieweb and the #fediverse at the moment. I don't necessarily understand all of it, but it's cool. As a complete noob to this kind of thing, do you think it's worth me investing time into learning about servers, hosting, syndication, coding etc.?
Long term goal is to maybe have a blog where I own all the data on it and know where it sort of goes. I'd also like to access info like on reddit but without a corp involved. Easy and fun or complicated and slow?
Basically my decision is between:
Option A - Simple end user setup
• Blog = GitHub Pages
• Micro blog = Mastodon account
• Community forum = Lemmy account
Option B - Complicated server owner
• Blog = Semi/self hosted site
• Micro blog = Mastodon instance
• Community forum = Lemmy/other instance
I'm not tech-savvy, but I don't mind learning if it's fun. I don't know if it's fun yet and I don't have loads of time. What's the time/cost (uk) commitment like for newbies in the #fediverse, with no history of web developement or similar?
I have concluded that Option A is the way forward, my brain will feel better if I spend more time at the allotment than digging around on a screen. Excited to give it a go though!
@rolerunner The quick answer is YES! You should absolutely invest time into learning more about #IndieWeb, #smallweb, #ownyourweb, etc..
I would suggest starting off as simple as you can and then learn, grow and migrate from there. My site, (for example) is on GitHub pages which gives me a great ownership model and as it uses Jekyll, it is quite powerful for posting / customization /etc…
I've written a bunch about the IndieWeb if you're interested in perusing... https://shellsharks.com/tags?tag=indieweb
@shellsharks omg yes this is what I need! Thank you! Sounds like GitHub pages is the best place to start, I'll give it a go, cheers :D
