Despite the #OGL fiasco, I was really looking forward to the upcoming Bigby giant book for #5e. Its subject matter interests me greatly, and its table of contents on #dndbeyond looks solid.
But the new #AI art fiasco with that book is really turning me off.
How #WotC responds to this is going to be important to me. I know I've been more forgiving to them than most -- and I want to continue being forgiving -- but they're making it hard.
@simple did you see their statement and the artist's statement?
The artist did not use generative AI, but did do an editing run with an AI powered editor.
WotC stated that the commission was completed over a year ago (when very few were against generative AI) and that they are adjusting their contracts to forbid generative AI
@bedirthan I saw the artist's statement. I didn't quite buy it. Looking at the preliminary sketches and all, I got a distinct feeling of "I don't know how to get the hands and feet to look right, so I'm going to let AI do it for me." (which of course is ironic because AI sucks at hands and feet, and the end result shows that)
In the end, if the artist is ok with his works looking like an AI mess, then that's on them. As a consumer, I'm not happy with it.
@bedirthan Now, I was NOT aware of WotC's statement. That makes sense. I hope they do right moving forward. As I said previously, I want to like them.
@simple This really isn't their year.
They had all the good cards - support of community, upcoming movie, Baldur's Gate 3 on its way, content creators excited to promote their products... it was wet dream of marketing.
And they screw up at every opportunity they got.
It was Elon Musk level of incompetence.
