With the Super Bowl in the US last weekend, and given posts I've seen here -- I'm curious about and

For someone entirely new and with limited access to other players (no league I've seen near me)...

What route in / on-ramp would you recommend?

How vital is access to a local league to enjoying the game?

@tuonel Blitzbowl isn't much of a ramp to Blood bowl. They are two very different games. That said, I actually prefer Blitzbowl. Smaller model count, card driven board control and action economy game. Very tight and quick. Bloodbowl is bigger and crazier. The crossover between the two is the models. Any team you paint up for Blood Bowl will also play in Blitzbowl. You're probably more likely to find an existing Blood bowl community. But Blitzbowl will be easier for you to teach new people.

@roofuskit @tuonel Agree on not using Blitzbowl to enter Bloodbowl.

Of you want to end up in the big game I would advise to check out Dungeonbowl, Gutterbowl and Sevens as a gateway to Bloodbowl. But in all honesty, any order is fine and they all are somewhat equally complex.

For Bloodbowl you could also check out the official videogame or Fumbbl, a free fan run online game. In Fumbbl there is not much easing in going on, tho.

@lenni @roofuskit @tuonel third discouraging you from onboarding BB via blitz bowl.

Idk where you live but I might ask around my network to see if there's anyone near you. TT is easiest.

Preferably you'd find a group who'd ease you in with a handful of games of 7s ,(7v7, smaller pitch size). In my experience around 5 games is enough to get a good grasp of rules and procedures.

Don't buy/borrow too hard a team. Undead, [flavour] Elves, Human, and Orc are low rules/high comprehension.

@lenni @roofuskit @tuonel also, local league adds an extra layer, in developing your team, watching some of the players become legends in their local competition and the glee of watching others' die or be maimed for ever. However, informal tournaments and game days are also a nice way of catching the vibe.

Sorry for not answering all😆

@erikcats @lenni @roofuskit Based on what you've all told me it sounds like finding a local league playing Sevens would be my wisest step into .

The voice in the back of my head that pushes to "get your kids into it" pushes toward Blitz Bowl but those experiments keep failing. 😂

I've got models backlog to go through before picking up a new game fully but "watching from afar" I like the idea of playing sport in a minis game as a change of pace.

The models look a lot of fun.

@tuonel @erikcats @lenni you can always bring your Blood Bowl teams in to Blitzbowl if you want to give it a shot or try to play it with your kids. My kiddo loves it, but we've been playing board games together since they were 3 or so.

@tuonel @lenni @roofuskit idk how 'muricans are but over here there are always some people willing to lend models to new guys. Where are you at? We can use network power to see what's nearest to you whenever you're ready

@erikcats @lenni @roofuskit I'm in New York City on Staten Island. Most wargaming activity I've seen is in Manhattan and Brooklyn, a couple hours away. (Congestion pricing may be improving that but I won't start on cross-borough transit in NYC.)

@tuonel @lenni @roofuskit 😜 Europeans of a certain age on New York: wait I know from Seinfeld that Staten Island is reachable by public transport, or isn't it?

@erikcats @lenni @roofuskit Ferry is the best way in my opinion, especially during rush hours. The local light rail is timed to it. Cross-borough buses are faster but double the cost and fall off schedule from car traffic.

It taking 2 hours to get into Manhattan is a result of questionable life choices on my part. Typical trip is 15m walk to train, 30m train to ferry, 30m ferry ride, plus ?m subway to final destination.

@tuonel Jesus

Well I can travel 150km in that time by train😬😬😬

@erikcats 150km 🤩

Yeah, 'Murica is piss poor at transit, especially regional trains. We let cars become too big a part of the culture.

Before the most recent Presidential election there was some hope of building better regional rail but since public transit isn't a priority to billionaires, we won't see much progress until we find a way to get them and their money out of our government.

@erikcats @lenni @roofuskit A friend once responded to my typical transit journey with "what are you, a kids' storybook?"

Yes, pretty much. But that ferry ride makes multiple modalities worth it.

I create problems for myself comparing to transit in past neighborhoods we've lived in. Staten Island was our best shot at an affordable place in what's still officially the city. But it means longer travel times.
