Autism and ADHD are NOT trendy. They're more common than we thought, and particularly manifest differently in women, so all the people that were missed as kids are connecting the dots on why certain things were so much harder for them in their lives than most people. And that lets them come up with actually effective strategies.
It's a very, very good thing that lots of adults are figuring this out. Life is much easier with proper language and connecting to other similar folks!
So much better for me to find out I'm different and not a bad person.
I can deal with different!
@uncanny_kate Every time a condition or specific population becomes more accepted, conservatives start calling it a fad.
@uncanny_kate One example where the Internet is a blessing.

Being able to connect is so incredibly important. It allows id to learn and realise we're not alone and finally receive the sort of affirmation we may never have had anywhere else.
@uncanny_kate I found out recently and “connecting the dots” describes perfectly my internal process these months. Now I understand a lot of situations from my past, I wish I knew it back in the day.
@uncanny_kate It always rubs me a bit the wrong way when people -including autistic people- say that other people are faking it because it's trendy and stuff, like... okay maybe that does exist but I think the vast majority of people are genuine, there are just different kind or ""severity"" of autism, and that's okay? Why all the gatekeeping? It just makes diagnosis harder and it's already underdiagnosed
@uncanny_kate also, if people without ADHD find ADHD hacks useful, who does that hurt? They're benefiting! Presumably, society is benefiting!
@uncanny_kate it's so trendy to realize that your trauma isn't a result of your poor choices but your brain simply being wired in ways our neurotypical society doesn't like
@uncanny_kate I'm 58 and got officially recognised this week
