Yora<p>Baldur&#39;s Gate was released 25 years ago on 21st December 1998.</p><p>The last major release of the year, it ended up as one of the highest regarded of this spectacular year&#39;s lineup and soon became regarded as having brought RPGs back from obscurity as a videogame genre and elevated BioWare to the giant of that part of the industry for well over a decade.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/BaldursGate" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>BaldursGate</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/adnd" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>adnd</span></a></p>

Yora<p>StarCraft: Brood War was released 25 years ago on 18th December 1998.</p><p>This expansion came out only nine months after the main game, adding some new units and visual styles for map and delivering what was basically the second half of the campaign.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/StarCraft" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>StarCraft</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/rts" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>rts</span></a></p>

Yora<p>Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was released 25 years ago on 3rd December 1998.</p><p>I really first started playing any videogames with X-Wing and then Tie Fighter, and when Rogue Squadron came out, I felt disappointed that it wasn&#39;t like X-Wing. But my brother played it a lot and it was probably one of his favorite games at the time.</p><p>Rogue Squadron ended up a quite successful and popular series in its own right.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/StarWars" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>StarWars</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/RogueSquadron" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>RogueSquadron</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>videogames</span></a></p>
Yora<p>Thief: The Dark Project came out 25 years ago on 1st December 1998.</p><p>Another game that was hugely popular with me and my friends. Though back then I never made it past the third level (the zombie tomb), and only came back to it some 15 years later. When it still was a really amazing game to play.</p><p>Coming out the same year as Metal Gear Solid, 1998 was not just a great year for games in general, but for Stealth Games in particular.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Thief" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Thief</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/TDP" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TDP</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGames</span></a></p>

Yora<p>Up to this point, 1998 had been a really good year for games. But the last six weeks went on to be absolutely crazy.<br /><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a></p>
Yora<p>Half-Life was released 25 years ago on 19th November 1998.</p><p>When this game came out, it was an immediate sensation and soon after taking the top spot in rankings of the greatest videogames of all time. In hindsight, it very much seems to have earned that reputation. Though Unreal had come out some months earlier, it&#39;s probably Half-Life that deserves the recognition as having revolutionized shooters more than any other game since Quake.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/HalfLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>HalfLife</span></a></p>

Yora<p>Fallout 2 was released 25 years ago on 29th October 1998.</p><p>While now often regarded not as highly as the first game for introducing parody jokes to the series and giving it a less serious tone, Fallout 2 was still a very highly regarded CRPG at the time and widely seen as a classic.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Fallout" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Fallout</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideogames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a></p>
Yora<p>Grim Fandango was released 25 years ago on 30th October 1998.</p><p>Often remembered as one of the last great adventure games of the period. (The other being The Longest Journey.) This kind of games did see something of a revival by Telltale Games and the core gameplay did live on various first person 3D games, but back in the 90s, they were a pretty major genre with many very famous titles.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideogames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/GrimFandango" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GrimFandango</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a></p>

And still I often feel disappointed that I didn&#39;t start this earlier, because there&#39;s so many great ones that I missed the last two years.</p><p>I decided to do 1999 as well, because that legendary wave of games did continue for quite some time.</p>

Yora<p>Metal Gear Solid was released 25 years ago on 3rd September 1998.</p><p>One of the craziest games ever made and the one that took the series to worldwide fame and success. One of the games that made 1998 probably the greatest year in videogame history.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/MGS" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MGS</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/MetalGear" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MetalGear</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/MetalGearSolid" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MetalGearSolid</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a></p>
Yora<p>Rainbow Six was released 25 years ago on 21st August 1998.</p><p>When this game came out, it seemed rather weird for a shooter, including tactical squad game elements.<br />I remember the game not being seen as one of the huge titles of that year but it was getting quite some attention. And ended up the first game in a series that has been going for two decades with eight games.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/rainbowsix" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>rainbowsix</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a></p>

Yora<p>Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines was released 25 years ago on 24th June 1998.</p><p>When this game came out, me and my friends were all over it. I played it a lot and totally loved it, though I think I never got much further than the third level.<br />The game became the start of a very successful series and directly inspired the Desperado games as well.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Commandos" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Commandos</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a></p>
Yora<p>Unreal was released 25 years ago on 22nd March 1998</p><p>When Unreal came out, it was seen by many as one of the most important releases of the year, regarded as an equal to Half-Life, which came out six month later. However, it soon faded into relative obscurity and was greatly surpassed in fame by its spin-off Unreal Tournament.</p><p>Its main legacy remains its game engine which has become the most important software family for 3D graphics.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/1998InVideoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1998InVideoGames</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Unreal" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Unreal</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/VideoGameHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>VideoGameHistory</span></a> <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>videogames</span></a></p>
