I lost the house against the French. It's a strange setup: at most one unit per building, so what do you do: keep your single units hidden or withdraw to that building as soon as possible? And then, let each of them gain concealment? And wait until the French are there? Or shoot at them from afar? So tricky.

Playing S9 Ambitious Assault with @Preuk. I play the Americans coming from the left, trying to eliminate the Italians. British reinforcements will arrive on turn 4. There was an intense firefight along the bottom where my advance was stopped by to tiny Italian units. There's a heavy machine gun on a hill in the middle and it broke down and got repaired and managed to beat back my Americans. And at the top I threw my guys into close combat, and we rolled the dice and I thought I had lost my unit and my best officer against all odds, but then we reviewed the ambush throw and saw that in fact I had ambushed the Italians and then we rechecked all the results and it turns out that the melee continues! Well, I didn't get as far as I thought I would but it's not a total loss.

If you are wondering, the #AdvancedSquadLeader starter kit rules are available from the publisher's site as a PDF! This includes the rules for all four starter kits so if you start with just the first starter kit, the rules would be a lot shorter.

I found a different copy online somewhere but don't have a URL for it. It was called ASLSK4_Rules_September_2021_Highlighted_1.pdf and had the rules colour-coded for the four starter kits, making it even easier to ignore the later parts.

And if you want to get started with #AdvancedSquadLeader buy the Starter Kit 1 and find a friend online or offline and start playing. Read the full rules a year later. No need to rush. There are four starter kits! There is a Discord Server where I found ASL people to play with. I recommend it.

I sometimes wonder about the “essence” of #AdvancedSquadLeader – and I’m not thinking about the hundreds of pages of rules nor the endless fiddling with the counters. That, too, of course. But in terms of gameplay? I’d say at the stage I’m at it is risk management. Strategy? Not so much. Attack on this flank or that, but then everything moves so sluggishly that there really is none of that. Instead: there is super high variance (dependence on lucky rolls) so that you need to have backup plans; you need to be able to switch approaches if the situation changes (like me failing to advance faster when it started snowing!); you need to have units in place “just in case” you get lucky rolls (like moving a tank to the back of the building to prevent units retreating and then being able to fire up to the second floor). You need to advance into fire, hoping the line will hold; you need to coordinate your units so they all show up in the line of sight of the enemy at the same time so they can’t all be shot at.

My French troops took the building with a lot of close combat and then there was one lone German officer who ran upstairs but my tank fired up into the second level and scored a hit, surprisingly. And with that, the game ended. The German troops on the left can't enter this building with a single Advance and so it's game over.

Next time, of course, I'm going to be playing the undermanned Germans defending the house!

My French are about to take the building. There is plenty of time, apparently. The reinforcements got into the house and blew up one of my tanks, but I'm still hoping that it is not enough. I entered the building and dove into a lot of close combat. Risky, but worth it. Before that, I was suffering a lot because I didn't have my troops lined up correctly. The machine gun assembled too far away to be effective. The angles wrong. And, in an interesting twist, we immediately rolled for snow fall, twice! So now there's snow falling everywhere, obstructing our view.
We did note that the Germans had one more MMC in the scenario setup but now I think I know why. The Germans are severely undermanned.

From tonight's #AdvancedSquadLeader action. The sniper counter is on top of a Soviet 76mm INF, which had a crew and an 8-1 leader at the beginning of the Defensive Fire Phase.

The 8-1 leader experienced all of the following conditions during this phase, in this order:

1) Broke
2) ELRed to 8-0
3) Wounded to 7+1
4) Berserk (and therefore rallied) to 9+1
5) Killed by sniper fire...

Oh, the gun got off exactly one shot. It missed. Of course. Dice!
