#Mastodon zeigt echte Freiheit: offener Code, den alle sehen; Verein statt Firma; föderiert, also viele kleine Server, keiner herrscht. Kein Werbedruck, keine Datensammelei. Spenden, nicht Silicon-Valley-Geld. So verlieren Milliardäre und Rechte ihre Bühne. Dezentral heißt Macht teilen, Hass bremsen, Demokratie schützen. Regeln entstehen vor Ort, klar und offen. #EinfacheSprache

#Mastodon and #Bluesky are the only viable major social media for me. Everything else is minor leagues or it's fascist/nazi/oligarch/commercial garbage to me.

What's really important to me is Native community and Mastodon is the only software that moves the Native community needle in the Fediverse, and the Bluesky Native community dwarfs Mastodon.

TurtleIsland.social and TurtleIs.land extra rock!

@atprotocol.dev

you're saying each should have one account? why not instead have them each run their own AP servers (like they probably do for their email and websites) for all their staff and bridge to AT? then they don't lose access to all their followers when the #bluesky relay has an outage.

The above diagram also illustrates the difficulty for making #Bluesky truly distributed by creating multiple Relays. Note that the Relay holds a copy of all the data. This means that every new full scale Relay would need to be sized to hold all the data, which is expensive.

Contrast this with Mastodon/Fediverse/ActivityPub where there is no centralized data copy. Every instance holds just it's own user's data and they all connect to each other.

What is a PDS?

Well, it gets complicated. But the simple answer is that the PDSs are the "distributed" part of the Bluesky architecture. There are multiple, supposedly decoupled PDSs, which all utilize a shared 'Relay'. In principle, there can be multiple Relays, but as of now there is only one full scale Relay. So the relay is the single point of failure, but that is not what is going down in these outages. Apparently it is due to multiple PDSs, all operated by #Bluesky, going down.

This morning around 6am eastern time #Bluesky suffered another widespread outage for about an hour. The Bluesky status page (status.bsky.app/) reveals that, unlike the outage last week, the outage did not seem to affect all PDSs. However, several company PDSs did seem to go down at the same time. It is not clear how this relates to last weeks outage. The company has not issued any statement yet.
