How near-death experiences arise in the brain.
@SciAm reports: "Researchers put forward a comprehensive model outlining the conditions that may give rise to the vivid mental phenomena that some people experience as they near death."
In 1990, George Franklin was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison based on the testimony of his 28-year-old daughter Eileen. Her memory of the murder was relatively fresh at just one year. But the murder happened 20 years earlier. According to the prosecution, Eileen repressed her memory of the murder. Then much later she recovered it in complete detail. The case launched a huge debate between memory researchers who argue there is no credible scientific evidence that repressed memories exist and practicing clinicians who claim that repressed memories are real. Brain scans of infants reveal the moment we start making memories - A team from Columbia and Yale University scanned the brains of 26 infants and toddlers aged 4 to 25 months as they completed a memory task. They found that at roughly a year old, a part of the brain crucial to memory formation spun into action and began generating neural signals related to things the kids remembered from the tests. #memory #brain #physiology #BrainDevelopment #thinking #ChildGrowthAndDevelopment #consciousness

It was an honor to be a panelist on #Dementia Stories for Impact: Dementia Life Course and Storytelling, sponsored by the #AlzheimersAssociation and #UCSF. My fellow authors and colleagues talked about the importance of #narrative, #empathy, #brain health, and Dr. Bruce Miller and I talked about our work together on my #memoir, Finding the Right Words: A Story of Literature, Grief, and the Brain. On the way to Lincolnshire at the weekend, we went up to A46. When I was about 9 years old, we had a pretty major car accident on the way to Skegness. No-one died. I got a flash back to that time and I am sure it was at the very point where the accident happened. It's a funny thing, the brain.

Just published my first Substack today, and I’m excited to share it with you! It’s also available on my blog. It’s a short read, about 5 minutes long, and there’s even an audio version
Today’s post is called “Left Brain, Right Brain, Who’s the Master?” It’s a philosophical exploration of how the structure of our brains might explain the current crisis in American politics, and what we can do about it. I hope you’ll take a look and let me know what you think!

Researchers have hit upon a discovery that appears to delay the symptoms of Alzheimer’s in some people genetically destined to get the disease in their 40s and 50s. “It’s still a study but it has given me an extension to my life that I never banked on having,” said Jake Heinrichs of New York City.
