Among the “lost Arnesonian classes” are the Merchant and Sage which I both like and the merchant, at least, is an integral PC class in the 2e setting by Tim Brown and Troy Denning. It and the Sage, also appear in Tim’s “spiritual successor”, the .

The “sage” could also be a way of introducing more contemporary fiction archetypes and factions into fantasy settings, e.g. (s), , , , etc..

@ChaskaTheMagicDog I’m partial to the Krikis from the . I’m not an entomologist but I have a thing for alien bugs…the Zerg, and the Xenomorphs, the Tyranids and the Thri-Kreen…and now the Krikis of Khitus. Khitus has a cool take on monkeyfolk and lizardfolk too but thankfully no Demi-humans or other common fantasy humanoids. Oh and don’t forget pachyaur; 2 races of elephantine centaur…

@Yora I believe that was by design. Not because there aren’t ruins and some of the modules deal with that sort of gaming style but the stories of the Dark Sun and the are stories of survival, not conquest (aka dungeon crawling). Dark Sun is a post-apocalyptic world that is the result of bigotry and exploitation. Dragon Kings is a mid-apocalyptic world suffering from bigotry and exploitation. In both cases the PCs aren’t the conquers but the conquered.

@HeyeBodo @greenspindle@rollenspiel.social got to write without corporate interference so he got to explore the themes he and did in . I was working with him to publish my rules but with the debacle we decided to stop as we no longer want to be tied to the . I like DK better and w/o corp’ he got to eliminate traditional Demi-humans making it more alien and a throwback to Howard, Vance, Norman, ERB, MZB…

@fdouglaswall @Yora F. Douglas Wall that was part of Tim Brown’s and Troy Denning’s project with ; to shatter that stereotype of the genre. With Tim’s he was solely responsible for the concept and he is still the authority over content, so no TSR/Hasbro/WotC execs saying you have to include elves, and dwarfs, and halflings oh my. He wants to narrow the rift splitting sci-fi and fantasy into separate genres. , & , , & .

Say! Speaking of Dark Sun! Do you want to get Tim Brown’s “spiritual successor” to Dark Sun? In it he explores many of the same themes which he and Troy Denning did in the original boxed set. However, he does it without the corporate oversight of Hasbro/WotC (or oTSR at that time). Arcane magic is alive and doesn’t like being tweaked so beware of the consequences of drawing too much arcane energy.
