This GDC had so many high points for me amid the chaos of the state of the game industry, and I am so appreciative of them all. It was an incredible honor to present the award for Social Impact to the team behind "Life is Strange: Double Exposure" at the Game Developers Choice Awards this year. At #GDC I walked by Immortal Funk Games, working Into the Woolderness, with sheep tending, wool collection, and knitting. Kneedle Drop is a rhythm game where you tap your knitting needles together and on your hands in pattern by color, mimicking knitting movements. Honestly I was terrible at it because I couldn’t remember which color meant which move. But it was fun! i've been watching old episodes of Electric Playground, and today's episode brought me back to 2000.
back then, i was an undergraduate, and any time i spent outside of class was either on irc or playing online games over dial-up. Ultima Online, Q2CTF and Counterstrike were pretty big timesinks at the time.
there was also a tiny but growing indie industry. games like DXBall 2 and Treadmarks managed to chew up almost as much of my free time as the aforementioned AAA titles. i didn't know it back then - but both of these little games were by the same company: Longbow Digital Arts.
i had known that the GDC IGF Seumas McNally Award was named after a developer who had won the IGF, and then died from his cancer soon afterward. what i did not know was that Seumas and his family owned and operated Longbow Digital Arts: they had made both DXBall 2 and Treadmarks, and that Treadmarks had won that year's IGF.
buried in this 25 year old episode is an interview with Seumas and his family. he died exactly 25 years ago, yesterday. we're all poorer for having lost him so soon.
My #GDC experience showed me how joyous and powerful and hella queer a crowd can be and I’m so glad I went.
Even at the same con where someone randomly asked me at the con store to pick between notebooks and I went “You’re asking a trans person about Harry Potter stuff, it’s really not the time.”
Lots of feelings about attending #GDC this week. If you work anywhere that has the same makeup of people, provenances and enthusiasm as I witnessed this week, treasure it and nurture it — what you have is precious and easy to lose.

#GDC was depressing this year.
Didn't find anything that really excited me in the expo hall, and the conversation topics were mostly around all the mass layoffs.
The W4 Games talk about #Godot progress was pretty neat, but I had to miss the actual Godot meetup to get to it. :c
Anyway. I think I've seen enough. It was nice meeting up with old friends I haven't seen in forever, but I think I'm just going to stay home for Friday.

A group of cross-discipline #VideoGame workers in the #UnitedStates and #Canada announced the first-ever direct-join industry-wide #union called the United Videogame Workers, organized with the Communications Workers of America (UVW-CWA)
I can even say this about the signage. No sponsors on that sign so they just copy-pasted "GDC" instead #gdc
Based on my unscientific "sit outside South Hall and observe" measurements, I am led to believe that there is a much higher proportion of unaffiliated developers to executives and people wearing logos this #gdc
