I was tempted to do this yesterday, but I'm doing it now...

One of the grand achievements of 'Godzilla King Of Monsters' (2019) is the music is really phenomenal. Bear McCreary's soundtrack reuses classic themes with incredible production values and is brilliant.

But... right now I'm gonna promote the more catchy cover of Blue Öyster Cult's 'Godzilla'.

It's performed by Serj Tankian (of System Of A Down) with support by Brendan Small and Gene Hoglan (GENE HOGLAN!) of Dethklok fame.

So yeah an amazing realisation of the classic Godzilla multi-kaiju films, realised with state of the art special effects, that maybe is a bit clunky as an actual film.

Oh, and I finally saw that title card at the end…

I think Ghidorah here is the best he’s ever been in his 55 year cinematic history. Giving the individual heads distinct personalities is genius.

But this film also sells how he’s an invasive species, here to disrupt the ecosystem. Alien in his biological abilities, and unnatural in earth’s environment.

My main problem with this film is the monster action is so so good, that the constant cutting back to the human perspective makes a frustrating watch.

The Kong films (coming up in the next few weeks) deserve credit for making the kaiju the main characters.

I still appreciate all the awesome moments in this film, even if the feel a bit fragmented to watch.

The Rodan sequence is phenomenal.

I suppose there’s only so many opportunities to do an aerial kaiju battle, but this one is great demonstration of a giant monster smashing the puny humans.

So this film is something of the black sheep for the MonsterVerse. Successful, but not as successful as the films before or after it. It also reviewed fairly poorly.

And personally, I know the things I wish it did better.

However, the things it gets right are incredible. It takes the classic monsters of the Showa era and brings them to life in amazing set pieces.
