"Put another way: China has created a system of interlocking industries. As China becomes stronger in some industries, this tightens its grip on others. What are the mechanisms by which overlapping tech-industrial ecosystems create this compounding or spillover effect?

Supply: Having existing domestic suppliers in upstream industries can make it easier to source parts and work directly with suppliers to modify specifications to suit industry needs.

Demand: Having an existing set of domestic buyers in downstream industries can provide a ready source of market demand and industry revenue. If downstream players are unwilling to buy domestically, they can be pushed to do so with policy measures, such as tariffs on foreign suppliers and local content requirements.

Technology: Technical knowledge and manufacturing know-how can be useful across industries. Investments in R&D and manufacturing techniques in one industry can have returns across other related industries. For example, knowledge of polysilicon production is useful for photovoltaic cell and semiconductor chip manufacturing. Being able to make inverters is useful for solar, EVs, railways, and telecom equipment.

Scale: If you have a product that’s an input for multiple industries, then having all of those industries domestically allows for greater economies of scale for that product. For example, China’s lithium battery industry can enjoy even greater economies of scale by supplying to China’s consumer electronics, EV, and energy storage industries."

#ReturnToOffice mandates have caused companies to lose some of their best workers, a study tracking over 3 million workers at 54 "high-tech and financial" firms at the #SP500 index has found. Das #Flugtaxi-Start-up #Lilium erhält keine staatliche Unterstützung vom #Bund. Die #AmpelKoalition lehnte eine #Bürgschaft über 50 Millionen Euro ab, vor allem aufgrund des Widerstands der Grünen. 👍

Während die SPD und FDP eine Förderung begrüßt hätten, bleibt Lilium auf der Suche nach #Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten. Der Erstflug soll 2025 stattfinden, mit geplanten Auslieferungen ab 2026.

Enjoyed Owen Hatherley’s piece on architecture in New Left Review:

Hatherley brings together two architectural movements: the big-name styles of High-Tech pioneers like Archigram, Norman Foster and Richard Rogers; and the AA-led crowd of figures such as Rem Koolhaas and Zaha Hadid. Known for Deconstructivism or Parametricism, the latter are often tagged with labels like ‘starchitecture’ ‘oligarchitecture’ or ‘signature architecture’.

Hatherley then contrasts these two movements to architectural firms that reject the demands of global market, refusing to ‘design its products – sprawl, luxury housing, airports, malls’. The foremost non-players cited here being Caruso St John who are praised for their commitment to quiet, unobtrusive design.

Ja, nur um ein paar Jahrzehnte Wasser heiß zu machen hinterlassen wir für circa 1 000 000 Jahre hochgefährlichen Sondermüll.

Und das mit "sogenannter #Hightech" - in Wirklichkeit aber mit #Dampfmaschinentechnologie, ein totaler Wahnsinn !

Eine gebremste Bombe einzusetzen, nur um Wasser zu erhitzen, ne, die Menschheit ist bekloppt.
