Eugene Parnell<p>Hiking Cowlitz divide, part 6. Photo 1: can you spot the birds in this photo? Photo 2: closer view. Sooty grouse (Dendragapus fuliginosus) seem to be everywhere up here and the only time you see them is when they move-- which is when you're within a few feet of them. In early summer you can hear their mating calls all over the mountain. <br>End of thread<br>6/6<br> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hiking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hiking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingadventures" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingadventures</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingtrails" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingtrails</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/PNW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PNW</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Washington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Washington</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/nativeplants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeplants</span></a></p>
Eugene Parnell<p>Hiking Cowlitz divide, part 5. Some more bear grass, and this time of year you can see the seed capsules and how they attach to the stem. There's a lot of it on Tahoma, more than I've seen possibly anywhere else. Photos 3 and 4: the dying of the corn lilies (Veratrum viride) is kind of interesting in itself. I love the way the stems droop over. <br>5/6<br> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hiking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hiking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingadventures" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingadventures</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingtrails" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingtrails</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/PNW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PNW</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Washington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Washington</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/nativeplants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeplants</span></a></p>
Eugene Parnell<p>Hiking Cowlitz divide, part 4. The forest gives way to subalpine meadows at about 5,000 feet (1500 Meters). This is part of the Wonderland trail that circumnavigates the mountain: in its entirety it's a 90 mile (145 km) loop. I'm impressed by how well people are staying on the trail here. A little earlier in the year and this meadow is covered in purple asters; next month, the huckleberry foliage will be bright red.<br>4/6<br> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hiking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hiking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingadventures" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingadventures</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingtrails" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingtrails</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/PNW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PNW</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Washington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Washington</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/nativeplants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeplants</span></a></p>
Eugene Parnell<p>Hiking Cowlitz divide, part 3. Photo 1: this stream looks all tranquil now but the spring snowmelt must create an immense torrent because last year on this very spot there was a massive tree trunk that served as a bridge. It's now in pieces fifty meters downstream. Photo 2: a bunchberry plant (Cornus canadensis) with only a single berry left on its bunch. Beside it is bear grass (Xerophyllum tenax).<br>3/6<br> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hiking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hiking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingadventures" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingadventures</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingtrails" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingtrails</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/PNW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PNW</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Washington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Washington</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/nativeplants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeplants</span></a></p>
Eugene Parnell<p>Hiking Cowlitz divide, part 2. Photo 1: some vanilla leaf (Achlys triphylla) at the base of another cedar. Supposedly they get their name from the smell of the leaves when crushed. I tried it and I gotta say just smelled like basic leaf to me. Photo 2: it's hard to get a photo of an old growth Douglas fir that really captures its scale. This one is almost two meters in diameter and maybe 50 or 60 meters high. <br>2/6<br> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hiking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hiking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingadventures" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingadventures</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingtrails" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingtrails</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/PNW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PNW</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Washington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Washington</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/nativeplants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeplants</span></a></p>
Eugene Parnell<p>Time for another plant &amp; hiking thread! This weekend I revisited a favorite location from last year: the Cowlitz Divide on the East slope of Mt Rainier (Tahoma) in the Washington Cascades. Like most of the best trails in this part of the world it starts with a long uphill climb through deep conifer forest. The twisty tree there in the center is a Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata). More to follow. <br>1/6<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hiking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hiking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingadventures" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingadventures</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/hikingtrails" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hikingtrails</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/PNW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PNW</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Washington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Washington</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/nativeplants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeplants</span></a></p>

It looks dangerous but it must be okay since so many kids do it. On a hot summer day, this place is busy! (I have heard from a couple of people that unfortunately this place has become a haven for underage drinking. I didn’t run into many people mid-day during the week, and I have a high tolerance for scruffy trails! </p><p>"Both recommended the lovely Indian Cellar Preserve, on the other side of the river.)</p><p>"For me, the nicest part of the park was the southern side, where there are several benches and picnic tables by the river, as well as an old cemetery (and no rope swings). </p><p>"The interior paths are less used, so are overgrown. Having a separate pedestrian walkway on this bridge would make it safer for EVERYONE -- and a lot of pedestrians and bicyclists use the bridge, as it is the way to get from one track of preserved land to another, and also the areas where local teens swim! The traffic on <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Route202" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Route202</span></a> on either side of the bridge is always going too fast, and there's a lot of large trucks and SUVs. After further design review, it was determined that a full replacement is a better and more cost-effective option in the long term, with reduced maintenance costs and an overall longer lifespan.
