Passing in front of a communications tower is a bird with outstretched wings much longer than its body, and a curved beak that looks like a bent pipe cleaner. This improbable bird shimmers like an old copper statue that’s been allowed to oxidize, a rich patina, mostly of green but with hints of red and blue.

Against a brilliant blue sky a large bird of many subtle hues of pink flies from left to right. The sun illuminates its feathers making thicker sections of wing deeper pink and the thin trailing edges closer to white. Its long bill is shaped like a spatula, or spoon, hence the name. Author Ian Fleming was a birder.

He even named his fictional spy after esteemed ornithologist James Bond, whose influential field guide “Birds of the West Indies” is still in use today.

In March 1956 Fleming joined a birding conservation expedition to Great Inagua, where I took this photo, today.
