Josie and the Pussycats may not have been a beloved film upon its release, but it’s very much a film ahead of its time and its rediscovery is a delight. To be fair, it’s not a big surprise that Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan’s satirical comedy didn’t find its audience right away. It’s right along the lines of D.E.B.S. and Jennifer’s Body in terms of a smart, subversive little flick that never stood a chance because its target audience was completely ignored. I wrote a book about #JosieAndThePussycats, a movie that bombed at the box office and became a cult classic. Its Rotten Tomatoes score has jumped ~25 points in the last few years as people re-evaluate it, and numerous artists, mainly young women, were inspired by it.
