🌙 Today begins the Hebrew month of Av (אב)—a time of deep remembrance and resilience.

Though we mourn the destruction of the Temples on the 9th of Av, this month reminds us of our power to transform sorrow into strength.

“Av” means father—a hint that even in grief, we are held and guided.

Hebrew embraces life’s depth. Through learning it, we honor the past and build a hopeful future.

חודש אב טוב — May this Av be a good month 💙

I know there are plenty of languages/vocabulary learning apps around, but are there any (I could use) for short trips? So focusing on things like ordering a beer or a coffee, asking for the bill, buying a bus ticket to somewhere, basics like “hello” and “thank you”…
Specifically looking for Hungarian and Romanian, from English or Dutch.

Today I was called 二货 ("erhuo"), which means "fool" and which I realised sounds very similar to the #Japanese word 安保/アホ ("aho").

So I assumed that must mean アホ comes from 二货, right?
But no, turns out アホ comes from Classical Chinese, and 二货 is modern Chinese slang.
So then that must mean 二货 comes from Japanese instead?

But that doesn't appear to be the case either.. So are they just similar in meaning and pronunciation by random?

Help me!

Language learning is pretty patient. There's a brief setback when learning is interrupted, but it comes back quickly when its resumed. I finished formally learning français 50 years ago but I can still dust it off and make conversation, when the opportunity arises. Now that I've joined a language exchange group, I can alternate between French, Korean, and English. I love it!

Just published:

Supplementing CEFR-graded vocabulary lists for language learners by leveraging information on dictionary views, corpus frequency, part-of-speech, and polysemy

A machine-learning method to suggest word candidates for CEFR-graded vocabulary lists.

doi.org/10.1057/s41599-025-054

- We compare 4 machine-learning algorithms: Regression trees, ordinal logistic regression, random forests, & naïve Bayes
- All are better than a random baseline (approx. double the accuracy).
- From these we use random forests (2k trees) to impute the #CEFR level of previously unlabeled words

My Anki reviews for the first half of the year have been chaotic, but I can explain! First I broke my elbow and didn’t feel like doing Anki, then I kind of got back on track, but motivation kept going up and down. Then I was sick last week, and dropped Anki again.

I did study today though! I have 300 cards to review and went through 100 of them which is not bad. I’ll try to catch up this week, and hopefully it’ll be the beginning of a new streak!

“Love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Did you know this beautiful teaching comes straight from the Torah? 📖 – it’s found in Vayikra (Leviticus) 19:18, and it’s one of the most powerful phrases in Hebrew and in life. 💙

In today’s lesson, I’ll teach you how to say it in Hebrew—so you can carry both the language and the message with you wherever you go.

🎥 Watch the lesson and repeat after me!

🚗💬 Ready to stop turning the wrong way in Hebrew? 😅

In today’s video lesson, we’re learning how to say right and left in Hebrew—super useful for navigating the streets and conversations!

Fun fact: When my husband first started learning Hebrew, he switched the Waze app to a custom recording of me saying the directions in Hebrew just so he’d hear the words for right and left every time he drove! 🧠➡️⬅️

Now it’s your turn! Hit play and let’s take a quick turn into Hebrew directions 🗺️🇮🇱

corpus search! change language/corpus to your liking

there used to be a time when you could just throw words into google as a corpus search, and see from the results how frequently they were used and in which contexts

so, I'd been bemoaning the loss of that but hadn't looked too deeply to find a replacement before, which now, I have
