I'm setting up a new device for someone who wants to try out Linux. What distro would you recommend?

Some information about the user:
- uses MacOS currently
- wants stuff to work (minimal tinkering after setup)
- quick to boot

The device will probs be quite an old device (~3-5 years old, 8gb+ RAM though) and is mostly to run OBS. I'll check system requirements when I know the device ofc, just wondering what you people think is a good distro for them.

Gestern irritiert wieso ein USB C Device (Wireless Headset Dongle) nicht funktionierte, heute funktionierte die heute wieder genutzte Thunderbolt Docking Station am anderen Schreibtisch nicht.
Neustart brachte nix, USB Storage getestet, an USB A ging er an C nicht, manueller shutdown und dann Start mit halten der Power Taste für hartem Reset hat dann geholfen, WTF.
Und dann denkt man sich wie so etwas Business Hardware sein kann... #MicrosoftSurface #Laptop #WorkShIT

Not as good as #framework but it is still good to have alternatives.

Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 (released in 2024) has a ifixit repairability score of 9/10. Some pros: Storage and memory are readily repairable/upgradeable using industry-standard parts. The battery is easily replaced, and the keyboard replacement procedure is best-in-class. Overall high modularity, apart from a handful of soldered ports and a bundled fan/heat sink assembly.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but #Fedora #protip : if you have Fedora installed on a #laptop , change your TuneD profile to "Balanced Battery" via the terminal. Just be sure to go into your DE's power settings to turn off automatic power saver as that will overwrite the power profile and will need to be manually invoked again.

Dropped my laptop from the couch and of course it landed on the charger and bent the connector.

The computer is OK, but the charger connector is broken. I have a low power USB-C charger that works sometimes, so I have to charge the computer at night or leave it on the table when I am charging it. Ordered a new one.

Would I be better replacing the screen (again) & installing #linux on my current laptop, or getting a second hand macbook?

I'm current on Windows 11 on an Asus Zenbook Duo with:
11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7.
16.0 GB ram.

I love that my current laptop has a 2nd mini screen, it is very useful for me.
It does seem to get very hot since the screen was changed last time - but it is also 4 years old.

I don't like Apple stuff but a friend said it's much more powerful.
