The #Biden admin authorized the license in 2022 after #Maduro agreed to work w/ #Venezuela’s political opposition toward a democratic election. But the election…was neither fair nor free, & Maduro was sworn in last month for a 3rd 6yr term….

Biden’s govt for months then resisted calls from Venezuela’s oppo & others to rescind the license [due to intense pressure in the US to keep #GasPrices down], whose goal the #US initially said was “to support the restoration of #democracy.”

#Trump’s announcement on Truth Social [🙄] accused the govt of Pres #Maduro of not meeting democratic conditions for last year’s July presidential election as well as of not moving fast enough to transport back to #Venezuela immigrants set for #deportation [the latter is all Trump actually cares about].

“We are hereby reversing the concessions that Crooked Joe Biden gave to Nicolás Maduro, of Venezuela, on the oil transaction agreement,” Trump wrote.

#Venezuelans are protected from #deportation under a 1990 #law that authorizes the govt to award undocumented immigrants #TPS if their countries are experiencing war, disaster or another crisis.
#Biden granted them TPS in 2021 & 2023. The 2023 group’s protections expire in April, while the 2021 group’s status expires in Sept.

Venezuelan TPS recipients have expressed fear & concern over the possibility of having to return as the #Maduro regime — which #Trump has railed against—remains in power.

#Proton is one of the few companies out there that I still admire for their fairness and ideological stances.

When #Maduro stole the latest elections in #Venezuela, the usual political theft patterns emerged:

  1. Extreme unlikelihood of the numeric results, which I already analyzed back then, and which points to naive manipulations of the numbers.

  2. Hard crackdown against any foreign non-governative websites. First most of the local fact checking websites were blocked, followed by 70 media outlets and NGOs (and even Wikipedia) blocked for a whole month.

During this time, ProtonVPN became the most downloaded app in Venezuela - downloads spiked up 4000% in the days before the election.

Of course, Maduro’s regime tried to prevent people from using it - on one hand Proton was accused of being a scam app designed to steal user data (and the fact that most of the Venezuelans still downloaded it shows to which extent they mistrust the lies of their illegitimate government), and on the other hand Maduro’s poorly staffed IT teams tried their best to block the VPN by blocking any IP subnets it used.

None of these efforts succeeded.

Maduro trying to discredit an app developed by a small Swiss company only had a Streisand effect that made the app even more popular.

And Proton on the other hand has learned to evade censorship attempts by governments with IT teams much more sophisticated than Maduro’s (China and Russia above all).

Talking of Russia, the CEO of Proton acknowledges that in the first weeks of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine (which Putin’s propaganda machine still called a “short-term special operation”) censorship was so widespread that at some point ProtonVPN handled 5-6% of Russia’s total Internet traffic.

The war against regimes however is never over. Russia’s crackdown on YouTube in August (which made YouTube unusable for ~90% of the Russian population) is still quite effective. And their efforts in blocking all the IPs used by foreign VPN services are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

That’s why it’s important to donate to companies like Proton. Even though I don’t use their mail services much nowadays (I migrated to a fully self-hosted solution), nor their office suite (again, self-hosted), and I’m lucky enough to live in a country where I don’t need a VPN to access most of the Web, I keep donating to them. Ensuring that everyone around the world can access the Web the same way I do is a price worth paying.

Without in any way remarking on the legitimacy or not of #Maduro, pls someone, remind me of the moral framework underpinning Merka's belief to do stuff like this [ditto, say, extraditing #whistleblowers like #Assange] when Merka itself defiantly arrogantly refuses to place itself under the auspices of the UN & ICC for its decades of myriad evil acts across the rock?

🇻🇪 What’s happening in Venezuela, hours before the swearing-in of Nicolás Maduro?

Luis Soto of Misión Venezuela Joven spoke to People’s Dispatch about why despite the international media campaign, the sanctions, and the threats of right-wing violence, the people of Venezuela have been out on the streets defending their democracy and sovereignty and the Bolivarian Revolution.
