What Do I Know?
I’ve read a couple of the new D&D novels (which is a sentence I’m still kind of surprised to be writing), but I haven’t had a chance to post any thoughts on these. I thought I’d try to quickly summarize these latest D&D fiction offerings, even though it’s always a little tricky for me to do book reviews, since I really don’t want to post any spoilers.

The two novels I’m looking at in this post are Dungeons & Dragons: Spelljammer: Memory’s Wake (yes, that’s how the title appears), and Dragons of Eternity: Dragonlance Destinies, Volume 3. Something that may be worth keeping in mind. Even though it was a long time ago, before this current round of novels began, Chris Perkins indicated that in D&D 5e, nothing is canon until it appears in a D&D 5e hardcover.

Twenty years ago, I would be shocked that I’m of this opinion, but I think that’s the right way to go. It means that if a really important event happens in the novels that the designers just can’t wait to include in the setting, they can, but if they don’t want to tell you that no, your PCs didn’t defeat Demogorgon during Out of the Abyss, that was Super Saiyan Drizzt, it’s not automatically true.

Additionally, we have been told that the Dragonlance novels that Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis are producing from this point on all exist in a separate continuity from whatever WotC does with the setting in official D&D setting books. That means that if you enjoy the events of a book, you can include events in your game, but WotC isn’t going to be keeping track, at least no more than they would for keeping a reign on their own IP.

Dungeons & Dragons: Spelljammer: Memory’s Wake

Author: Django Wexler
Publisher: Random House Worlds
Pagecount (Physical Book): 272 pages
Length (Audiobook): 10 hours and 42 minutes
Narrator (Audiobook): Lisa Flanagan

One of the ways in which I manage to warp time is to listen to audiobooks while I’m doing work that doesn’t require the entirety of my cognitive processing. That means I consumed this novel via the audiobook.

I was actually a little shocked that there was a Spelljammer novel, of all settings, being released in 2024. I may have been less shocked if this had come out closer to 2022, but then again, seeing how well the synergy worked out between Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus and Baldur’s Gate 3, this may have been planned to come out closer to the release of the Spelljammer slipcase.

I was very interested in this book, while also being a little wary, for two reasons. The first is that I remembered the old Cloakmaster Cycle novels. This was a series of novels that mostly took place in Spelljammer locations, but was also partially predicated on the need to travel to various D&D settings of the time to advance the plot, meaning that we got to see Krynnspace, Realmspace, etc. This ties into my other concern as well, which is that I loved Spelljammer in 2nd edition, but I felt it quickly lost the thread by worrying too much about expanding the Forgotten Realms out into Realmspace, extending the Dragonlance story to the worlds in Krynnspace, etc. To me, the charm of Spelljammer was that you can take characters from various settings, have them learn one another’s quirks that they bring with them, but have all of those disparate characters travel to a new and unique location, playing up the weird fantasy of Spelljammer.

That is one of the reasons I was pleasantly surprised at this novel. The novel doesn’t start off in any existing D&D setting, but rather, introduces Shatterspace. This is one of those wild fantasy locations that you can have in Spelljammer, as it’s a society with settlements on various remnants of a world that was destroyed in the ancient past. Different asteroids and debris house different cities and cultures, who often depend on Spelljammers moving from one location to another for trade.

This also means there are plenty of locations for pirate havens, housing pirates that run the gamut from fun but larcenous rogues to infamous Neogi raiders. While everyone lives in fear of the Neogi, even they participate in trade as well as murder, theft, and kidnapping.

Into this setting we see Axia, a woman who has no real memory of her past. She lives with the dwarf merchant that adopted her, and she spends her days with her giant space hamster, running errands for her adopted father. This is an adventure novel, so this status quo isn’t going to last very long. Axia is attacked by an assassin that has mistaken her for the infamous pirate Blacktongue, and she finds that she’s more competent at combat than she previously knew.

Kori and Nia, a Tiefling warlock and a half-elf cleric of the God of Thieves, arrive to offer Axia the opportunity of a lifetime. Axia looks enough like Blacktongue that Koria and Nia, who both served on Blacktongue’s crew, think they can find a treasure that Blacktongue left behind when she disappeared a few years ago. They just need Axia to pretend to be Blacktongue and convince her old crew that she has returned.

This book plays on a lot of well-worn tropes, but it’s also very fun. Kori and Nia have a wonderful relationship that consists of their constant snarking at one another, while also showing genuine affection. Axia is a sympathetic and enjoyable protagonist and seeing her exploring Blacktongue’s diaries and slowly uncovering the mysteries she left behind, while navigating the ins and outs of the asteroid society and the various fantasy creatures that exist there, is very satisfying. I really enjoyed this novel. While all of the Forgotten Realms novels that have been released have been solid and fun efforts, this is currently my favorite of the new wave of D&D novels.

On top of fun supporting characters and a likable protagonist in a fast-paced fantasy adventure story, this does exactly what I want Spelljammer material to do. The narrative isn’t pushing us to fly away to Toril or Oerth or Krynn. There is more than enough going on in “local” Wildspace. This is what I always wanted in a Spelljammer novel.

Dragons of Eternity: Dragonlance Destinies, Volume 3

Authors: Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
Publisher: Random House Worlds
Pagecount (Physical Book): 400 pages
Length (Audiobook): 12 hours and 56 minutes
Narrator (Audiobook): Kristen Potter

Since this is the third book of the trilogy, there will be a few spoilers for the previous novels in the Dragonlance Destinies series. Before we get into this, I need you all to know how much I loved Dragonlance when I was younger. I used to reread the Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends every summer when I was in high school. I eventually threw The Legend of Huma and Kaz the Minotaur into the mix as well, since they were two of my favorite non-Hickman and Weis Dragonlance novels.

I keep reading Dragonlance novels because of my love of the original few trilogies, and I’ve been increasingly disappointed. If this were just disappointment in Dragonlance novels in general, I would just chalk it up to not being thrilled with the current round of Dragonlance authors. The problem is most of the novels that have been disappointing to me have been the books that have had Hickman and Weis returning to the setting.

The most direct line I can draw to what didn’t work for me in this novel is to look at the Dragonlance Lost Chronicles trilogy, novels that were meant to fill in the gaps between some of the time jumps in the original Chronicles novels. I wasn’t happy that some of the characters that experienced character growth felt more like the characters they were at the end of the story, too early in their history. The gods were way more present, almost casually discussing events with various heroes and villains. While the Gods of Magic always controlled the flow of magic via the moons, the Wizards of High Sorcery, in part because of this increased familiarity of the gods, start feeling more like alternate clerics.

A lot of those qualities feel present in this book as well. We start with Raistlin and Sturm trapped in the time of Huma, with Huma and the Silver Dragon having died before he could use the Dragonlance to banish Takhisis. In the future, i.e. a few years after the events of the Dragonlance Chronicles, Astinus sends Kas and Tanis back in time to an alternate war taking place instead of the War of the Lance, to distract Takhisis from keeping Destina from going back in time and fixing what happened to Huma and the Silver Dragon, and maybe winning that version of the war, just in case Destina can’t fix what went wrong.

I cried when I read Dragons of Winter Night, when Sturm died. I was relieved when it was implied that Raistilin’s “reward” for not destroying the balance of the gods for love of his brother was that he wasn’t being tortured by the Dark Queen for eternity but got to enjoy an eternal sleep. I say this because I am so tired of reading about Sturm and Raistlin. If they had been supporting characters, I think I would have been okay with it, but we get so much of the book from their perspective, when they become the main characters again for a while. In fact, after the first book, this trilogy seems extremely uninterested in engaging with Destina as a protagonist.

Caramon feels genuinely stupid, rather than just unsure of his own intelligence in the shadow of his brother. Tas is supposed to be cute even as he is unable to avoid constantly jeopardizing various important tasks by seemingly both understanding, but being uninterested in, the importance of what is going on. Tas feels like he has digressed, he’s less mature and wise than he was in other stories, and defaults to being the “oops, I made things worse, until I need to accidentally make things better” character. Kitiara doesn’t seem like a great leader, and she even seems kind of uninterested in her job, despite her reputation. The main reason Kit is a better leader than some of the other Dragon Highlords is that she’s a little less arrogant and detached than the other Highlords. I actually wish Bakaris was lost in time, and by that, I mean, for real, like edited out of any Dragonlance book where his name ever appeared.

Of all of the returning Heroes of the Lance, the one I’m the least annoyed with in this book is Tanis. Thankfully, this is the generally content Tanis that isn’t at the center of some emotional turmoil, and even the slight conflict he feels in this novel doesn’t spiral Tanis back into some of his worst indecisive moments. He’s focused, he knows what needs to be done, and is working hard to keep everything together for as long as he can. Tanis is one of the characters that actually does feel like a nice, comforting return to a known character, the same feeling I get from Astinus and Dalamar as well.

Now that we’ve been time traveling multiple times through multiple novels, the rules feel a lot less simple than they were back in the Legends days. Somehow, time is synched, so there is a certain amount of time before the “present” is affected, but it has already reached the era of the War of the Lance. The gods seemingly exist outside of time, and know that multiple timelines exist, but they also, in the moment, don’t know details about what is going on, and have to “focus” on something before they understand details. This wouldn’t feel quite so disjoined, if the gods weren’t very chatty and chummy with mortals in modern Dragonlance novels.

I don’t know if I can recommend this book. Even if you’re extremely nostalgic for a particular moment in time regarding Dragonlance, I’m not sure that you won’t have the same reaction that I’ve had. It looks like the next books Hickman and Weis are working on are novels set during Huma’s time, and that might be a little better, moving away from characters that they have written over and over again, back and forth through time, to the point that it’s hard to see them as something other than a fuzzy “average” of what they have been across many books and many eras. But The Legend of Huma and Kaz the Minotaur were the books I loved the most after the Chronicles and Legends, and yeah, I should know better, but we already know from the first book in this series that Knaack’s version of that time doesn’t exist in Hickman and Weis’ version of the setting.

Final Thoughts

Spelljammer: Memory’s Wake is a fun read, and if you’ve ever enjoyed a D&D novel, especially novels that focus on the more swashbuckling and adventuresome side of the game’s narrative, I think you’ll enjoy it. Dragons of Eternity: Dragons of Destiny, Volume 3 left me asking, “why did we do this” by the end of the novel, and I hope I don’t reflexively pick up the next book, knowing what I haven’t been enjoying when it comes to Hickman and Weis’ novels since the 2000s rolled around, but years of reading and rereading books that I loved makes it hard to resist the nostalgia.

https://whatdoiknowjr.com/2024/09/01/what-do-i-know-about-books-spelljammer-memorys-wake-and-dragons-of-eternity-dragonlance-destinies-volume-3/

#DjangoWexler #Dragonlance #DragonlanceDestinies #DragonsOfEternity #HickmanWeis #MargaretWeis #MemorySWake #Spelljammer #TracyHickman
