@ajsadauskas@pixelfed.social A bit more on this forgotten moment of Australian sporting history:

"It was pandemonium. About 15,000 people were at Parramatta Leagues club and its immediate surrounds. Players were lifted from the team bus into the club by elated fans.

"The fence pickets that weren’t souvenired had been piled together to make a bonfire.

"The fence pickets went up. The grandstand, a wooden heap built in the 1930s, soon followed. The scoreboard at the southern end was ablaze. It was a fibro structure set on two metres of brick with a clock on top, which a group of men tried feverishly to rip free for a keepsake before giving up and leaving it to burn.

"The goalposts were added to the bonfire, after one fan tried to climb to the top of them to get a flag. The man was still atop one pole as they fell, yet ran away and into legend. Advertising hoardings were ripped free and torched, taking chunks out of the fence.

"Firemen and police eventually broke up the party. When they returned the next day, Cumberland Oval was a smouldering ruin, the grandstand a charred carcass."

And that's why there's a statue of a bus in the main town square in Parramatta.

Central Coast Health is advising people to be alert for signs and symptoms of measles after being notified of three cases who were infectious while visiting several locations in the Central Coast, #Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas.

One of the cases, who is unvaccinated, recently returned from Vietnam, where there is an ongoing large-scale outbreak of measles. The cases are known to each other.

People who attended the following locations at the specified times should watch for the development of symptoms.

📌Go Vita Lake Haven shopping centre
▪ Sunday 2 March 2025, 11am – 2pm
▪ Sunday 16 March 2025, 10am – 4pm

LAKE MACQUARIE:
📌Charlestown soccer ground
▪ Saturday 1 March 2025, 2pm – 5pm

📌Belmont Hospital Emergency Department
▪ Monday 10 March 2025, 10.30am – 8:30pm
▪ Sunday 23 March 2025, 11am – 6pm

📌Go Vita Mount Hutton shopping centre
▪ Monday 17 March 2025, 11am – 5pm

Anyone who visited the above locations at those times should monitor for symptoms.

“It can take up to 21 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it’s important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms until the dates indicated.

“If you develop symptoms, please call ahead to your GP or emergency department to ensure you do not spend time in the waiting room with other patients.

Lifeless rock pools at Sawtell

After cyclone Alfred whipped up a 'bacteria smoothy' along Australia's east coast the sea foam then merged with a 'flush' from the suburbs. Dislodged smelly sponges at Sawtell beach made breathing and contact impossible. Even without fossil fueled disasters the intertidal zone at the north end of the beach is barren. The rock pools and crevices no longer house sea anemones, crabs, black nerites, limpets, sea stars, mulberry oyster borers, algae, sea anemones, sponges, tube worms, sea stars, oysters, and fish.

Still good enough for hosting 'sports' and advertising events amplified by megaphone so they can be heard at Lord Howe Island too.

Abusing beaches as highways

"Overcrowding due to a surge in visitors at some of Queensland's pristine beaches has raised safety and environmental concerns. Reports of offences including reckless driving, littering and even defecating have increased at 4WD beaches in recent years amid a domestic tourism boom."

Traffic on beaches
It's the Wild West - turning beach ecology into a Woolies car park

Off-road vehicles are allowed to cause "serious ecological harm" to beaches, dunes and estuaries ecosystems. Vehicles traffic is causing "unequivocal serious and widespread damage" to coastal dune ecosystems. "All of the species had suffered negative effects caused by off-road vehicles. The four-by-fours running over them basically crush them to death."

"Professor Schlacher said the Noosa North Shore, Rainbow Beach, K'gari and Bribie Island were among the car-accessible beaches that were being "pummelled to death"". On Bribie Island "there can be 1,200 vehicles on the beach in one day, and that's ridiculous. It's just like a Woolies car park."

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred sparks call to cyclone-proof homes as far south as northern NSW

"The research is really clear that cyclones and severe weather events are coming south along the Queensland and Australian coastline, and that our severe weather events will become more severe... Professor Steve Turton, a climate change expert with Central Queensland University, said homes and buildings outside traditional cyclone zones should now be subject to cyclone ratings, including in south-east Queensland and even northern New South Wales. I would suggest it needs to go down to at least Coffs Harbour." >>

Little penguins trapped in rubbish and starving

"The penguin likely starved to death because it couldn’t break free."

"March has been a bad month for Victoria's little penguins, with large numbers discovered dead on beaches in and around Warrnambool and west of Phillip Island. Those deaths have been linked to rising sea temperatures and overfishing of the penguin's natural prey."

Sea foam - You wouldn’t go swimming in sewage

"Research shows people should not go in the sea when it is foaming. These bacterial smoothies can contain more harmful pathogens than a sewage treatment plant – and you wouldn’t go swimming in sewage."

"If the water is polluted with floating fats and grease as well as asphaltene, motor oil and hydrocarbons, these spores soon form bacterial colonies or biofilms that go forth and multiply."

"Reducing stormwater pollution will reduce the growth of sea foams. As long as humanity continues to produce pollution, the problem will increase. It will also worsen as the world warms, because sea foams like it hot."

Rain and cyclones flush the land and it is leading to the waterway's inhabitants' death.

"Mass fish kill in NSW Northern Rivers following Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Thousands of fish and other aquatic animals have washed ashore across the NSW Northern Rivers, as floodwaters surge through the catchment triggering a fish kill. "
