This colorful lizard is found in abundance in the coastal regions of Mauritius, however, locals consider it vulnerable because the invasive Madagascar gecko Phelsuma madagascariensis, twice as large, outcompetes and occasionally preys on it. Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦"Basket of Roses," Henri Biva, 1891.Biva (1848-1929) was a Realist/Naturalist painter of landscapes and the occasional still life. His work is recognizable for a degree of realism and attention to detail that prefigures the photorealism that would rise in the late 20th century.I once showed one of his landscapes to a friend, who gazed at it for ages, then said, "You can almost HEAR that painting," as in it was easy to imagine the calls of birds and buzzing of insects. It was as if one could step through the frame into a lovely, but realistic, scene.His attention to detail, his skill as a colorist, and his ability to depict natural light and make it LOOK natural on the canvas, are remarkable to me. He is scandalously overlooked and deserves greater attention....a lot of his work may not look like much at a glance (views of meadows or wooded glades or the shore of a pond or creek) but reward your attention with their amazing detail and realism. This Is My GlasgowJust to finish off today, this is my favourite statue of Robert Burns, who was born 266 years ago today. It was created by F.W. Pomeroy and was erected in Paisley's Fountain Gardens in 1896. Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦"Hay Making," Jules Bastien-Lepage, 1877.Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884) was famous for his agricultural scenes. He was a transitional figure from Realism to Naturalism, which later gave birth to Impressionism. His plein air paintings of peasants and farm scenes won him acclaim and financial security, but he sadly died young, apparently of cancer.Here we have two peasants taking a rest from their labors in the fields. They both appear exhausted, with the woman seeming to dread any further work ahead. The metal lunch bucket by her feet indicate it's noon, and the haystacks in the background indicate the work already done. This Is My GlasgowThe Ploughboy of the Western World: F.W. Pomeroy's beautiful 1895 sculpture of Robert Burns in Fountain Gardens in Paisley. Pomeroy was a leading member of the New Sculpture Movement of the late 1800s, which aimed to portray figures in a more naturalistic way, in contrast to the prevailing neoclassical way.
