Cannibal Halfling Gaming
The funnel and beyond: Pre-play character creation
In RPGs, character creation methods abound. You can create characters mechanically with point and option spends, build them alongside a backstory with a lifepath, or just roll some dice and see what comes out the other end. When it comes to actually aligning the characters with the game you’re about to play, so much so that you need to bring the GM along for the ride, I think I’ve found one of the best options. Now, one reason you’ve likely never done this before is that it’s […]
https://cannibalhalflinggaming.com/2025/04/16/the-funnel-and-beyond-pre-play-character-creation/

Cannibal Halfling Gaming
Is Grimwild the next Dungeon World?
When Dungeon World was released in 2012, it slammed the door to Powered by the Apocalypse open so hard it broke the hinges. By taking the recipe crafted in the Baker House and mating it to the memetic power of Dungeons and Dragons, suddenly everyone could see what was so powerful about PbtA. Of course, Dungeon World was hardly a perfect recipe. Using the architecture of ‘moves’ established in PbtA but keeping both the stats and classes of D&D made for an incomplete match, and some of the mechanical choices made to get the two to pair up have received more significant criticism now that the design community has had a good decade and a half to really figure out what PbtA is. Still, the combination of a solid foundation and a lot of good ideas made Dungeon World into a rare specimen: The commercially successful fantasy heartbreaker. Svantevid
A deceptively simple question for day sixteen of RPG a Day 2024. My first response would be to list a few games with rules that are easy to pickup. But I don’t think that is the best approach for the heart of the matter. What interests me with this prompt is which games teach you what they are trying to do in a way that is quick to learn.

I think the best of the Powered by the Apocalypse family of games do that – Apocalypse World, Night Witches, Bluebeard’s Bride, Last Fleet, Under Hollow Hills .. to name a few. And the way they do it is through the moves you use to interact with the game world. The moves shape the way the game wants you to think about it.

Another good family of games that has a good way to show you what it wants are Fate games. Two of them immediately stand out to me: Atomic Robo and Unwritten: Adventures in the Ages of MYST and Beyond. Atomic Robo beautifully build on the Fate Core system, but what makes them sing for me are the Brainstorms and Mission Briefings. Two sets of mechanics that allow the players to steer the narrative, but they also tell you the player a lot about the way the game want to be played. It tells you that crazy, out of the world ideas are very much on the table. And that discovery and team work is a very Atomic Robo way of looking at the world.

On the other hand Unwritten is a game where violence is never a solution. Not even that, it is not even an option. So what the designers did was to remove it from the rules completely. And by doing that, they are showing you, teaching you, that approach (pardon the accidental pun) is not an option for this game.

https://www.svantevid.com/en/2024/quick-to-learn/

#ApocalypseWorld #AtomicRobo #BluebeardSBride #Fate #NightWitches #PoweredByTheApocalypse #RPGaDay #RPGaDay2024 #UnderHollowHills #UnwrittenAdventuresInTheAgesOfMYSTAndBeyond

Svantevid
ODG je 112 i igramo Masks: A New Generation, Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) igru koja se bavi adolescentnim superherojima, njihovim životima dok odrastaju u punopravne superheroje. Sjeli smo, navukli maske i vrlo brzo stvorili Neke nove klince.

StripArt

Freak, Superior, Saviour, itd. Oni ne predstavljaju stvarne karakteristike lika kakav on faktički je, nego predstavljaju kako pojedini lik vidi sam sebe. Mijenjaju se, idu gore i dolje. Sve do trenutka odrastanja, kada se više ne mijenjanju. Oduševilo me koliko nešto toliko jednostavno i maleno, podupire osnovnu temu igre – promjenu i odrastanje.

Scenarist i ilustrator

Masks mi je vodio isti GM kao i Pasión de las Pasiones, i moram istaknuti jako dobro strukturiranje u obje odigrane igre. U obje partije smo imali istu strukturu:

Uvod u pravila i samu igru.

Izrada likova.

Sličnu tehniku sam igrao u Escape from Mos Shuuta, službenoj uvodnoj avanturi za Star Wars: Edge of the Empire, gdje likovi imaju napredovanje sredinom avanture.

On se prvo nećkao.

Errata corrige

Tokom igre sam imao problema sa aktiviranjem super moći svog lika, uspio sam tek u zadnjoj akciji koju sam napravio u partiji.

https://www.svantevid.com/hr/2024/neki-stari-klinci/

#MasksANewGeneration #OnaDrugaGrupa #PoweredByTheApocalypse #ttrpg
