Some of what we found in the #SeamountsExpedition and the nonsense, desperate excuses from the New Zealand Fishing Industry.
(Climate change causes coral to turn into rubble? what?)

“Coral graveyard” blamed on New Zealand’s bottom trawling fishing fleet
youtube.com/watch?v=i2fjkL4f_1

Ignoring the popular demand for protection to cave to commercial fishers again.

This is yet more regulatory capture from the fishing industry preventing actual protection for a dwindling return of about $14K a year.

The health of the Hauraki Gulf is worth so much more than that.
(And there would be more fish for everyone if the area was protected properly) 🐟

The #blobfish has beaten the #OrangeRoughy by almost 300 votes on the #fishOfTheYear election.

The OR campaign is gracious in defeat (unlike other orange candidates before us) and sincerely congratulate the blobfish, a fellow deep sea fish, on its victory.

While the blobfish may have taken the crown this year, bottom trawling can wreck the hopes of all deep-sea dwellers. #ProtectTheOcean, because every fish —blobby, orange or otherwise— deserves a healthy habitat to thrive in!

Busy day on the #oceans front! 🌊

21 countries have now ratified the Global Oceans Treaty (aka #BBNJ ) 🥳

That's just over a third of the 60 needed for the Treaty to come into force and build a legal framework for protection of the high seas! 🐳

39 to go! 🐢

The latest one is South Korea 🇰🇷 (still to be added to the website linked), but Marshall Islands 🇲🇭 , Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 and Malawi 🇲🇼 are also very recent ratifiers! 🐬

Let's #ProtectTheOcean 🐙 🦈

I didn't even know we had a #FishOfTheYear Election!

But now I do and I am supporting the Orange Roughy, one of the main victims of the destructive Bottom Trawling industry!

Vote Orange Roughy to highlight this issue and #BanBottomTrawling

(Or another, they're all good fishies and you get 3 votes🐟)

"...why should we care about an orange fish, at the bottom of the ocean, that you will probably never see?

I would like to propose an answer: Because the orange roughy is a perfect totem for every other species that we extract until its gone, it is a reflection of our relationship with our environment. We need to recognise this pattern, and change it, because it appears to lead to oblivion, every time."

Remember the trawler that hauled up 37kg of coral in the Tasman Sea? 🪸

@greenpeace is sending an expedition to survey the seamounts. We could go and reveal the damage done.

But the Govt refuses to release the coordinates, despite other countries and the fishing industry having them already.

Still, we got them from Aussie! 🥳
Sorry Shane.
