Caramelized Shallots

I made sure to get out to Alley Pond Park in Queens yesterday to catch peak blooming of the glorious trout lilies! I love trout lilies. These are American trout lilies (Erythronium americanum) They are native to most of the eastern halves of the US and Canada, although other species in this genus are found throughout North America. They attract many types of native bees and other insects. We did see some bees, but not as many as I would have liked.

Photo of a trout lily. It is a small yellow flower on an upright stalk about 6 inches high. The petals bend toward the back exposing the stamen and pistel. There are a few brown dots on the petals right at the point where they start bending back. There are two leaves per plant that are long ovals that come out of the base of the stem. The leaves are shiny green with reddish brown splotches.

Had a great turn out for today's event at CUNY York College. Hoping someone shares pictures of participants in action with me because I can never take photos while making paper with people.
We made casts from 2 sections of the sculpture. I think people enjoyed it and appreciated the sculpture in a new way!

I'd like to learn to darn a sock - just saw a video m.youtube.com/watch?v=DOmm8HL5 about how to make a patch using a Speedweve Style Mending Loom and that seems fun. I'd like to try it out before I buy a bunch of stuff. Anyone in #Queens #NYC have one and interested in letting me try theirs out? Or maybe I could check whether one of the NYC makerspaces has one I could try.

Ah! My friend offered to let me cast the gorgeous peacock mosaic he had commissioned for his office. Not sure how well that would work (its pretty flat), but look at that stonework above it. Pretty nice for a modest storefront.

The old timey architects should have had the decency to put their decorative elements at street level where I could access them and ... cover them with wet paper. So inconsiderate to put them high up on these facades!
