Lots of sugar, though. Spent a little over two hours revising on a super-difficult topic chapter† that I expected would take four, and wouldn't publish until morning. Conclusion: No Effect! (I don't like feeling inebriated, in any case, so maybe not a fair experiment?)I'll take the question another way. Does alcohol intake influence story plot lines? Occasionally. It has its place, but other than a glass of wine at a state dinner or sipping an apricot cordial being courted by a gorgeous guy, usually not that much. The largest part alcohol played was a chapter in Reluctant Moon. I've been watching Korean dramas recently, where drinking, drunk Koreans revealing secrets, and alcohol rituals play a significant role in almost every series. So... I thought, Why not? I wanted to make certain points with a gay older man SC and the soon to be college student male MC who is currently being tutored by him. This follows the man and his partner breaking up, making a scene at their campgrounds. He makes a point of wanting to get drunk, but the MC won't let him... Until the older man volunteers to teach him how to drink with a woman. Needless to say, much juicy dialogue and repartee follows, and things like holding the bottle to show the label, how to turn your face drinking the soju, and even how to do a "Love Shot." I've written some short stories and posted those on Mastodon (as samples) at the same time. I've a couple of other novels on hiatus ready to continue, pending time to give them, or cooling of the current ones. It depends on how clear I am and how engaging the stories are, and whether they wake me up at 3AM demanding to be written. Two MCs, a man and a woman. One is a college-bound white maths and engineering genus, the other a black who, even with an aptitude for flying jets, the best they can hope for is a segregated blue collar job. They marry and solidly follow their gender roles despite blowback. Everything in their world is different, of course, including the gender and race prejudice they live daily—which they rail against while conforming—even what we in the 2020s would count as a bold marriage. They're more traditional than they'd admit to. Do you love it, is there not enough stories written within it, are you an avid reader of the genre, etc.? </blockquote>I write things that span from SF to SF fantasy to fantasy, but the WIP is definitely science fiction fantasy with technology based on a new force of nature. I write stories about people, but mostly write about people in societies somewhat or altogether different from ours. I think there are plenty of good stories written in these genres and, when I read, I am an avid reader of the genre.But, when you analyze it, I tend mostly to write slice-of-life stories, lots of coping with life and the people around the MCs, interspersed with adventure. How do you grow up to become an astronaut is a major topic of the current WIP, as is how the MCs became astronauts, then their experience discovering an alien colony whose existence may be endangered just by they're talking to them. So, I write about people, sometimes aliens, interacting, dealing with choices.An example of the entertaining oddities of life that show up: The young male MC (the other is female) is being taught to drink by a gay man just jilted by his lover. The MC isn't gay, but he's concerned and goes along with being taught as the other becomes drunk. I am using all I've learned about drinking etiquette watching Korean dramas (we are approaching 100 shows). Oh, right. The men are angels. The men have wings, which affects the etiquette.The scene clarifies child rearing in their society. No kidding.Yes. Do they affirm gender or preference, or aid in asserting it? We're talking anything from little pony toys to a Ferrari here. </blockquote>Even though I wrote the prompt, toys aren't a big part of my stories. Even one where a toy could have been very symbolic, the girl is caught playing with... sand. Magic holography, but still. So, forgive me if I stretch the meaning of toy slightly. Thorn Rose asked this question would slyly reply she has the best toy. Asked further, she'd point to her boyfriend Streak Carryingaton who'd look shocked she'd say this aloud. You might catch a slight blush. She, however, is a woman of her times, often comes off as sexist, and is proud to tell others (when he isn't around) that she gets lots of use out of her "toy." She likes showing off his trophy good looks and keeps him around as much as she can. Her toy is very gender role affirming (see below). He affirms her preferences with gusto.She's a Right Stuff personality circa 1960s but female, with what appears to be "magical" prowess not physical. He genuinely enjoys quietly supporting her ambitious goals.
