Martin Stendel<p>Today, I presented a poster at the <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/EGU24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EGU24</span></a> in Vienna. On behalf of my colleagues <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/AdamJonKronegh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AdamJonKronegh</span></a> and <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/EsbenSkov" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EsbenSkov</span></a> and myself, I present the actual status of our <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ROPEWALK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ROPEWALK</span></a> ship journal digitization project, which is a joint venture of <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Rigsarkivet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Rigsarkivet</span></a> (the National Archive of Denmark) and <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/DMI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DMI</span></a>, funded by A.P. Møller Fonden. More than 50 people wanted to find out how far we've got with reading the data by means of machine learning. Maybe we can go into production mode soon, so see me at <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/EGU25" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EGU25</span></a>!</p>
Martin Stendel<p>Finally! These logbooks from the Royal Greenlandic Trading Company (KGH) are the first to be scanned in the <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ROPEWALK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ROPEWALK</span></a> project. Adam Jon Kronegh and I estimate this to be roughly 1% of all the documents to be digitized.</p><p>KGH had a monopoly on all trade with <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Greenland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Greenland</span></a> from 1774 to 1950. <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Rigsarkivet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Rigsarkivet</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/DanishMeteorologicalInstitute" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DanishMeteorologicalInstitute</span></a></p><p>Once they have been scanned, the logbooks return to the National Archive and will not be touched for the remainder of the project.</p>
