Update. The incoming president of the #RoyalSociety, Paul Nurse, says that #ElonMusk should consider resigning from his fellowship in the society.
thetimes.com/article/e13fc48e-

But "Nurse…stopped short of backing calls to expel the billionaire."

PS: Why? As I read this piece, Nurse is waffling and holds these three propositions at the same time:
* Musk is systematically attacking science itself.
* Musk is just an eccentric who has some offended some people.
* Musk deserves his fellowship for past work regardless of his recent conduct.

Update. From #MikeTaylor (@mike): "#Musk…in the last few months has possibly done more to impede the progress of science worldwide that literally any other person in history…I will not submit any of my papers to #RoyalSociety journals, as I have done in the past, and I urge others to take the same step. Similarly I will no longer be providing peer reviews for Royal Society journals, and I urge every other scientist also to withhold voluntary professional labour. And I will no longer contribute to their conferences, and urge others to join me in this."

Update. "The #RoyalSociety has decided not to take disciplinary action against Elon #Musk [who is a fellow of the society] over his conduct, saying that to do so could cause damage to the academy and science itself."

PS: The RS is not considering how the 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘦 to take disciplinary action is damaging the academy, science, and of course the RS itself. It's also saying that its own code of conduct counts for nothing.

The Guardian · Royal Society decides not to take disciplinary action against Elon MuskBy Nicola Davis

This process should actually make us reflect on Karl Popper's paradox of tolerance: a society must be intolerant of intolerance in order to remain tolerant, since unlimited tolerance would lead to the destruction of tolerance itself by allowing intolerant forces to dominate.

The Guardian · Royal Society decides not to take disciplinary action against Elon MuskBy Nicola Davis

Update. "Elon #Musk will remain a fellow of the #RoyalSociety after a meeting to discuss revoking his association with the U.K.’s most prestigious science organization ended without any disciplinary action being taken against the world’s richest man…More than 3,400 scientists and academics have also signed an open letter expressing their dismay at the lack of action by the Royal Society."

Update. Another resignation from the #RoyalSociety to protest its failure to expel Elon #Musk. Thank you, Kit Yates (@kityates), for your action and public statement.

"So for me it’s time to take a stand, small as it may be, and to distance myself from the Royal Society until such a time as it has the moral courage to specifically denounce the actions that Musk is taking to undermine science in the US and elsewhere. I will be resigning my position as associate editor at the Royal Society’s journal _Open Science_ with immediate effect. I will no longer submit my research to Royal Society journals or act as a peer reviewer for them. I would urge my colleagues to do the same."

The Guardian · Elon Musk is a proven danger to good science, but the Royal Society won’t say it. That’s why I resignedBy Kit Yates

"The Royal Society is correct in its statement that it needs to 'advocate for science and scientists at a time when these are under threat as never before and yet at the same time have never been more necessary for humanity at large' – but without the society taking concrete action to enforce its own rules and defend its own scientific integrity, I’m not sure I can have confidence in it to advocate for the broader scientific community."
