Stone Age European hunter-gatherers reached North Africa by boat, ancient DNA reveals New genetic studies offer the very first clear evidence that European hunter-gatherers crossed the Mediterranean and came into contact with North African populations as early as 8,500 years ago. The discoveries challenge long-held beliefs about how agriculture and cultural influences reached the region while attesting to the resilience of local populations in the eastern Maghreb. In new research published in the journal Nature, co-led by Ron Pinhasi of the University of Vienna, David Reich and Mark Lipson of Harvard Medical School, Alfredo Coppa of Sapienza University of Rome, and Giulio Lucarini of the National Research Council of Italy, researchers performed a genome-wide analysis of nine individuals from Algeria and Tunisia from the Later Stone Age until the Neolithic. The eruption was identified in ice cores by the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen as having caused a period of cold and darkness and severely affecting early agricultural societies. The volcanic event, which occurred around 2900 BCE, spewed large amounts of sulfur into the atmosphere, forming a haze that blocked sunlight. This, in turn, caused temperatures to fall and significantly reduced sunlight—a challenge that led to crop failure and proved to be an existential threat, particularly to Neolithic farmers...

In that moment, I found a flint knife beside me, I had to pry it from a dead man’s hand, only to realize it was severed with no arm attached, the beast had bitten it off, but then, I took the knife and drove it into the wolf’s throat and his blood poured down on me and the animal collapsed over me. Stone Age family killed in house fire 6,000 years ago, study reveals A recent interdisciplinary study of ancient human remains from Kosenivka, Ukraine, has revealed new insights into the lives and deaths of individuals from the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture, a Neolithic society that flourished in Eastern Europe between 5500 and 2750 BCE. Archaeologists first uncovered the site in 2004, located about 115 miles south of Kyiv. Within a burned house, researchers discovered 50 bone fragments belonging to seven individuals, including two children, one adolescent, and four adults. Four of the individuals were heavily burned, while three were unburned and found outside the house. Radiocarbon dating revealed that six of the individuals likely perished between 3690 and 3620 BCE, while one person’s remains dated roughly 130 years later, suggesting a complex series of events.

journals.plos.orgChildren at play: The role of novices in the production of Europe’s earliest Upper Paleolithic ceramicsAlthough archaeologists are learning more about the lives of Upper Paleolithic children, the significant contributions they made to the welfare of their communities, including their role in craft production, remain understudied. In the present study, we use high resolution photographs of 489 ceramic artifacts from Dolní Věstonice I and II, Pavlov I and VI, and Předmostí, five archaeological sites in Czechia (ca. 30,000 BP) to address two questions: 1. Can the ceramic products of novices be distinguished from those made by experts? 2. If so, can we tell if these novices were children? To address these questions, we documented variables known ethnographically and archaeologically to be associated with learners in a sample from these five sites. The sample is composed of fired (“ceramic”) and unfired (“sedimentary”) anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines, non-diagnostic figurine fragments and a sample of the so-called "pellets" from one site, Pavlov I. Our results support the hypothesis that ceramic objects are the products of novices, and in many cases, these novices are children. Our findings have implications for inter-generational knowledge transmission, the role of children in craft production and the importance of learning through play.
