The #Titan sub was made of carbon fiber. I have a carbon fiber bike and know how strong, flexible, and resilient to stresses it is. I also know that a hairline fracture is enough to destabilize the entire system. I know NOTHING about engineering. The idea that it would be used to withstand that type of pressure is just idiotic to me.

It's a little disappointing to see so many nasty and mean-spirited remarks about the demise of the #TitanicSub's passengers. Regardless of how you feel about the endeavor, the guy who built the sub, or the wealth of the passengers, these were human beings who leave behind devastated families who love them. You have a choice to express either empathy, or viciousness. Go with the positive emotion.

This #infographic from the #BBC does a decent job illustrating just how incredibly deep the #Titanic is. Any #rescue operation at that depth will be a massive undertaking; it will also presumably take a lot of specialized equipment and time, the latter of which is in very short supply…

It is unclear if the #Titan had any emergency locator beacon at all, an EPIRB.

If they could surface, they may have no way to tell anyone where they are (and according to #Oceangate the hatch cannot be opened from inside).

The cost of an EPIRB can be less than $1,000 from Amazon (about €910).
