- Spiked speedwell (Veronica spicata).
- Annual mallow (Malva trimestris): one perfect bloom on a gnarly mess of plant.
- Dandelions (shrug) with a pretty Ladybird.

Wait. What's that over there by the pond? On that Canna Lily leaning over?

Okay, I'm giving this #WildlifeWednesday another go, after my blooper yesterday...
Osprey on a Monterey cypress snag in morning fog, Baywood, California; August 2021.
Disaster averted! There's been a wildfire nearby, the fire planes have been busy flying over the house for a few hours. I was photographing a pair of Booted eagles when all of a sudden a fire plane came and joined the scene! The eagle managed to dodge the plane. It could have ended very badly for both the eagle and the occupants of the plane but thankfully that did not happen! #WildlifeWednesday #Birds #WildFire #BirdsofMastodon #Nature #Spain #Wildlife #Photography #Andalucia #BirdScrolling
Always trying to get a shot of Goldfinches but they are very skittish. Finally, when I'm far away, a trio, known in this #garden as The Marauders, pick seeds from Coneflowers while a Tiger Swallowtail feeds on a Shasta Daisy.
They should continue to have food through the early winter because I have made sure to maintain flowers and shrubs that will support them, like Beautyberry, Asters, and Thistles.
Edit: Replaced with functional gif, I hope.

Not totally satisfied with the post processing on this image. I'm still very much in the learning phase of Darktable and GIMP.
Just catchin’ some rays.

#WildlifeWednesday somewhat in disguise, with five European starlings perched in this sadly pretty dead Coast Live Oak tree.
EDIT: I have been informed that it isn't Wednesday in all parts of the world just yet. Like, where I live. Oops! Adding a Tuesday hashtag. ;) There!
There was evidence of animal populations despite being an urban creek. Mussel shells and snails were abundant.
After about 30 minutes, I found what I was looking for. It was not doing so well. Maybe it had been a victim of people playing in the creek the previous day.
This is the Nashville Crayfish. Notice the long claws with orange tips with a black band. Also the "saddle" coloration on the carapace helps with identification.
We have River Keepers, but we need more Stream Keepers, people watching out for the creeks near their homes.
There are citizen science opportunities for young people, and habitats and rare populations to protect.
Check out the little waterways near you.

On my recent trip to Nashville, I planned to visit a unique creature. The creature is unique because it lives in a relatively small habitat that it cannot escape.
It lives in the "Nashville Basin," a geographic bowl. It also lives in creeks and streams, therefore trapping it in the basin.
To find the rare creature, I traveled early on a recent Sunday morning toward the headwaters of Mill Creek, one of the few locations where it can be found. There was an access point at a park.
I put on my water exploring shoes, and stepping in, memories of a childhood spent in creeks like this filled my mind. I slogged carefully upstream beyond the area where there was evidence of a lot of human activity.
Would I find one?

A very young Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) eating Hawkesbeard stems in my backyard. The adults can be approximately 44cm (17 in) long, but this little one was only about 15cm (6 in)!

1/ Pipistrelle bats! 2 to 3 distract me most warm evenings, while sitting out on laptop after 1st dinner.
I caught first 2 shots, recognisable if not pretty, after noticing they repeatedly bomb up & down the gap between houses.
